I posted this in two spots so I'd be more likely to get a reply.
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis just 5 1/2 weeks ago after being rushed to hospital. I am on prednisone (down to 40mg day - down to 35mg day as of Monday - and then reduced weekly until end of May).
I am on a 100% lactose free, low residue/low fibre diet, and an introduction diet and coping with that quite well except for one problem....
QUESTION ONE Why the heck am I craving sugar so much? It's like I can't stay away from it and when I start I can't seem to stop? (Okay, maybe it's just me and I need more control?)
QUESTION TWO I'm experiencing a lot of water retention lately and I'm wondering if there are any safe solutions? I can cope with the look of the puffy face, I am finding it hard to cope with the feeling I get with the water retention in my feet, hands, and face.
Your help is appreciated.

Hi CityWoman - Unfortunately, I've never heard those two questions yet. Hopefully, Heather or someone else will come along that can help you out.

You might already be doing this, but upping your soluble fibre supplement and your water intake could help the water retention. Also, cutting out added salt?

Hi CityWoman!
You said you posted in two spots, but you didn't say where. I hope one was in the Colitis Board because they might have more answers for you.
I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about colitis. However, I too crave sugar -- AND I retain water something fierce. Just the other day in the doc's office I showed him how puffy my hands are and how tight my rings fit, and he said that the meds he just prescribed for my high blood pressure are also a diuretic and will help with the water retention. Also, Linz' suggestions are spot-on; drink lots more water and throw away the salt shaker.
About that sugar craving. I gave up all sugar 2 weeks ago in an attempt to lose weight (it worked -- I'm already down 3 pounds), and I'm craving the stuff something terrible. But I'm using just a tiny bit of honey in my tea in the morning and evening, and during the day when I crave it I fix myself a smoothie (banana, peaches, TINY bit of Soy Dream frozen non-dairy dessert, and TINY bit of honey), and it's very satisfying. Okay, so I guess I haven't cut out sugar all together, but that's a drastic reduction for me!
Give it a try! And do check out the colitis board. Good luck.
