Med's user's for IBS?

I was wondering how many IBS user's out there have to use some form of med's to help with their IBS? As I do!
I have been on Librax almost two years.I ask my Dr. & he said I can use them the rest of my life. I have had IBS 5 years. And am just now getting back to somewhat of a normal life.

I have tried Bentyl, but it made me waaay worse. I am IBS with "D". Diet has made the biggest difference and once or twice a week I have to take Immodium AD. I have also been put on the anti-depressant Lexapro for it, but it did not help. I think that "might" be because my IBS is not stress related.

I been taking lexapro for 3 weeks now, so far so good after the first terrible week. We'll see if it lasts. I previously took Elavil, but I gained weight and slept a lot.

Hi! I'm new here but I am also on Elavil, an antidepressant, but it hasn't helped at all. Diet seems to work better!

I took Asacol for a while, and it seemed to help at first but then things came back for the most part. My gastro thinks it was a placebo effect.

I have been on Hyoscamine for about 8 months now. It definitely helped out at first but now that Ive taken it for so long Im not sure if it does much anymore!

To help stabilise my IBS I took:
Immodium
Lansprazole (for acid)
Spasmonal Forte (an anti-spasmodic)
I only take these now when I'm having a bad patch, but they really helped to stabilise me and let me get on with life.

IBS now for 11 yrs. Started out with Dicetel-2 1/2 yrs. Asacol - 3 yrs. For the last 6 yrs (also diagnosed with UC used cortifoam for this) been using Dipentum; ( switched to Pentasa enema form for UC).Also use imodium when needed.

We all vary as to med usage. The lady behind the fragrance counter at Macy's told me her IBS is in remission (and has been for the past 10 years!), but when it was "in full force," she was on meds every single day for 4 years.
I take meds only as needed, not every day, and I'm proud to say I haven't had to take any for the past month. I'm a D, and this is what I take:
For diarrhea only (no cramps): Lomotil
If I think cramps are coming on: NuLev
For LITE cramps only (no D): Hyoscyamine
When I'm doubled over (WITH D): Donnatal
Note: Donnatal is very dangerous; there are serious warnings and terrible side effects, including confusion, delirium, short-term memory problems, disorientation, and impaired attention. I take this ONLY when I'm seriously cramped up. The only reason I do take it at all is because it WORKS -- and it's the only thing that does.
Now, having said that, Heather used to take Donnatal but she says her peppermint caps work better! So you might consider ordering those caps from her.
I'm really glad your doc has found you something that works for you. But take heart. If the Macy's fragrance lady got her IBS into remission such that she "never thinks about it anymore" (can you imagine?!?), then you can too -- we ALL can!

for me meds are essential. tried just diet and fiber but at the moment it's taking all three to keep me stable (2.5 months no d)
as far as i'm concerned i'll take them the rest of my life if i have to as they have given me my life back

Have had IBS about 4 years now and only recently actually tried doing something about it. I am one of those who can tolerate whole wheat. I am trying to go by diet alone.
Here's to hoping it works!! I haven't tried really any meds so I can't give much input there. I like to try and go the natural way if I can. Just feel better about it. But EVERYONE is different and what works for one, doesn't work for the other!

Levsin works for me now, I tried to stop taking it for about 4 months, my Dr. told me to stay on it. I used to take Librax years ago, it made me sleepy and sluggish. Good Luck to you!!
