Hi,
I am new to the board. I've had iBS-like symptoms for the last 5 years, but never technically diagnosed. I went to doctor recently and I tested positive for h-pylori bacteria which has been linked to ulcer. I still believe that I have IBS in addition to h-pylori. I've been taking antibiotics as perscribed, but my IBS symptoms are in full force and making me miserable. I am wondering if the meds are hurting me more than helping me (they are supposed to kill off good bacteria with the bad). Has anyone here been tested for both h-pylori and IBS? I wonder if the two can coexist?

Yes, I'm absolutely sure the two can coexist. Keep taking the antibiotics, but call the doc back and explain the problem and see if he or she can prescribe something to help you get through the regimen.

Plus of course, use any and all suggestions on this website to manage the IBS symptoms.

Good luck, and don't give up, it WILL get better!!

yes, I've had heather's cookbook for a couple of years now. But for the last couple of weeks no matter what I do I am in pain, eat or no eat. I've tried doing the restriction diet and then carefully reintroducing insoluble fiber but no help. This is The Worst I've ever been.

I had an ulcer(h-pylori) before I was diagnosed with IBS-C. Keep taking the antibiotics, because that's the only way to kill the H-pylori. You should also try taking acidophilus to help you stomach flora (good bacteria) get back to normal after your treatment. But I think you are right, there's a link. Right after I was treated for the h-pylori, that's when I started having problems with IBS-C. I was diagnosed a couple of months later.
I read somewhere that IBS is usually a result of trauma to your stomach/intestines. Having ulcers (H-pylori is definitely traumatic. The only relief I have had is taking an antidepressant for the pain and spasms and trying to eat better following the diet plus taking Citrucel. I hope this helps. You should definitely talk to your doctor to see if you can take something for the pain and disconfort. -Chela

Have you ever looked into probiotics? They're found in soy yogurt and are also available as supplements, and they help increase the GOOD flora in your gut. I've heard others say they're very helpful in helping you maintain a balance oof gut flora while you're on antibiotics. If you do a board search you'll find a TON of info on them! They're available at health food stores and even some supermarkets. I would highly recommend giving them a try!

I've been taking them in pill form and I've increased my dose since starting the antibiotics. I've tried soy yogurt, but for some reason I find it to be a trigger for me! I am not sure why, some are rather acidic and they add stuff for flavor. Stoneyfield Farms is the best brand in taste and in the fact that they use only natural ingredients, but they are packed in the same plant they do their milk products, so I think they are not completley milk-free, which explains why they've made me sick in the past.

Yes, I do believe that they can coexist. And yes, you will have IBS symptoms while under treatment for H Pylori. My advice is just to eat very bland food - like rice and boiled/baked chicken, while you are taking the antibiotics, if you can keep any food down.

I do speak from experience - I had it last year. I went through 3 months of daily vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea before they finally diagnosed the H Pylori infection. They then gave me two weeks of intensive antibiotics (2 antibiotics and stomach acid reducers in the morning and the same again at night). Talk about going thru hell, what a nightmare! Then the dr did an EGD to confirm that it was gone and that I didn't have ulcers (both negative, yippeee). After I finished treatment, I was no longer vomiting and the diarrhea eased a little but I was still very nauseated and dizzy and finally was diagnosed with IBS. The dr was no help about IBS info and I found this website and been on the diet ever since then, to great relief of my IBS symptoms.

I would think that your H Pylori infection should be cleared up with antibiotics. I have heard that some people have to do several intense treatments before they kill it all (using different meds the second treatment). I don't believe that the infection caused my IBS, just kicked it into overdrive. I was having symptoms before then, just didn't realize what it was...but I bet it can cause it since stomach trauma seems to be something that can kick it off.

Good luck, stay on the antibiotics. I know it is a terrible ordeal and you will have IBS symptoms while you are taking the meds, but it will get better. Your dr should follow up with you to make sure the infection is gone. Stay on the restrictive diet for a while if you can, that was the only thing that I could keep down while I was receiving treatment. ((HUGS)) to you, I know what you are going through.

Shari
