Hi,all-I've had IBS for years (but didn't know what was wrong until about 3 years ago). I've been reading your posts for about 2 months, and you guys are great!! Thank you for all the wonderful advice...You all DID convince me to give up coffee, which wasn't so hard in the mornings. But I used to always make a pot around 3:30 or 4 in the afternoon when my "energy slump" would hit...It's been so hard to give this up, as I am usually exhausted by then.
Sometimes I can go for a walk, and that gives me a little boost, but I can't always do this depending on my kids'
schedules and homework, dinner, practices, games, etc...Tea
just doesn't cut it for me...I do drink it in the morning
occasionally, but if I need to "wake up", it doesn't
help. Any suggestions to keep me from brewing a good ole
pot o' Joe? I almost broke down and made some today at 4pm.
Energy bars? (IBS safe, of course). Red Bull? (I've never tried it, but maybe some of you have). Thanks in advance...

HI!

I know what you're going through!
I don't drink coffee or tea (except herbal). Chocolate is also a trigger but surprisingly, I seem to handle chocolate flavored soy pudding pretty well. Since my body is no longer used to caffeine, it usually gives me some energy. Chocolate Soy milk could also help when you crave for coffee. You can heat it in the microwave and put it in a cup so you feel like you're having coffee.

If you lack energy at the end of the afternoon, maybe it's because you need to eat something. You can try toasted bread with nut butter and jam (pear jam, for example). Fruits can also give you energy (I eat lots of baby jars: strawberry, bananas, etc.). Kree's ginger muffins could also help you since they have molasses in them.

Good luck!!

Isn't Red Bull caffeine??

I used to swear by power naps. Set a timer for 20 minutes and just close your eyes and relax. Try not to think about everything you have to do, just doze off if you can. But when the timer goes off - GET UP! If you sleep longer you'll be groggy.

There was actually a study published in the NY Times that proved that 15-20 minute power naps improved people's scores on cognitive tasks the rest of that day! Cool, huh?! And no IBS triggers involved!!

Mary, how about some juice? It has sugar in it, and that's certainly a "jolt." Don't tell anyone, but I have grape juice, which is 100% juice (no sugaaaaa!)

Congrats on giving up the java. It's not easy to do, I know. Been off the stuff for 3 months now, but still craving it. BTW, don't have even a sip of it. I couldn't stand it when hubby and I went to ihop for breakfast; I had 2 sips of his cuppa, and OMG! I've been tasting it -- and CRAVING IT -- ever since.

How about a smoothie?? They always make me feel energized in the afternoons. You can just throw some sliced banana in the blender, cover it with soy or rice milk, and throw in a little bit of sugar and either some cinnamon or cocoa powder and voila! Instant energy boost.

I was JUST thinking to myself, "Self, what can I have to eat?! I'm starving!" I came onto the boards to try to get my mind off my hunger, and I came upon this post of yours, Kree. And of course there's the answer: a smoothie! Oh YEAH!! I'm gonna go fix one now.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

How about some Peanut butter on melba toast?
If it causes gas have a little beano before hand.
Energy drink called Balance, comes in strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. It's totally IBS safe.
There are soy bars that come in different flavors.
I agree to a nice rice milk smoothie.
Also a great thing to do is make up some snack mix homemade to grab and go.

i'm glad i read this thread! i can eat peanut butter? i had eaten it every day when i was pregnant - craved it! - but haven't had any since. i think you can also get almond butter, apple butter - wonder if those would be okay!

i don't eat butter now at all and the tofutti cream cheese didn't do much for me so i've just been eating jam on toasted begals but it's sooooooooo dry!

good idea about the smoothies!
