I am a big believer that it is important to keep a sense of humour in difficult situations, so I thought I would share with you the profound things I have thought of, whilst spending all that extra time in the bathroom:
1 - Why do English people put carpets in the bathrooms? I don't think I have ever seen a carpetted bathroom in Canada. And in my house here, it's not just one of those really flat carpets, but really fluffy. Fluffy carpets... water... doesn't that sound like a nice place for some fungus? Lovely...
2 - My boyfriend's mum is really into scented toilet paper. Not only is it scented, but bright pink. It is just one of those things that makes me think, "Why is this necessary in life?". And I can't even tell what it is supposed to smell like... some sort of cross between flowers and talcum powder and mold... It's lovely.
Yep, this is how I spend my time now. Sitting on the throne, pondering the important questions in life... If only I got paid...

Sounds like a lovely "loo" there what with a fungus smell and a mold smell.

Sure you want to live there!?

Thanks for your musings. They were good for an early morning smile!

Yep. Last house we built in California we had them install wall-to-wall carpeting throughout the entire upstairs (including the bathrooms) and entire downstairs master bedroom AND MASTER BATH, all around the toilet, the shower, the soaking tub, vanity -- yep, ENTIRE ROOM. The only rooms that didn't have it were the kitchen, dining room and living room, and they were hardwood floors.

But wait! I have more to shock you! Guess what color the wall-to-wall carpeting was? Yep, you guessed it -- WHITE. Now how 'bout THAT!?

I loved it -- absolutely LOVED it. It was so warm and clean and white and yummy under foot; I even liked to lie on it. (We won't go there.)

When we began building our new home up here, I told the builder I wanted the same thing. He wouldn't do it. He said no, no wall-to-wall carpeting in the bathrooms, nope, just refused. He said I could pick anything else, but recommended vinyl, tile, even hardwood, but absolutely no carpeting. I chose ceramic tile. Can you imagine how freezing cold that's going to be in the middle of the night when I get up every 2 hours to go pee?!? I'm gonna have to get me some huge throw rugs for that room. Maybe it'll all be -- BRIGHT PINK!

I'm shocked! Carpets in California bathrooms?? I never woulda guessed it!
Upon some deeper consideration of this carpet in the bathroom happening, I have to admit that when I lived with my parents in Canada, they had that really cold tile flooring in the bathroom. And even though I can help peering into the fluffy white carpet from time to time, wondering if maybe there is something hiding in there, it sure does feet a lot better against the feet than that cold tile.
Actually... do you know what the funniest bit is, now that I think of it? My mom bought a throw rug to put down IN the bathroom to cover up the unheatable tiles... So I guess it does make more sense to just have the carpet there in the first place maybe...
Bev, you have given me a revelation.
What would I do without these boards???

House Doctor would be mortified!!!! She comes over here with her Californian interior design and shows us Brits how to sell our houses. Her pet hates in England are the net curtains and the carpet in the bathrooms!!! I never would of dreamed it was goin' on there too!

We've NEVER had carpet in our bathroom, although my mum did have a penchant for nasty big fluffy rugs which attract all the fluff, hair and spiders you could imagine, so I soon made her get rid of them. YUKKKY!!!!!!!
OK, maybe this is just over here, but don't men there ever miss with their aim even just a little???? On the carpet???? Eewwww!!

Hi Shells, Where have you been? Like some of us, busy?

Hows the wheat free diet coming?

I'm the odd man out here. Living in a dry climate we don't have a mold/mildew problem. Wouldn't think of not having carpet in the bathroom. Hate to step on a cold floor with bare feet and so do my guests. If you get the right kind it's as easy to keep spotless and clean as any other flooring. But, then that's just my 2 cents worth.

Hi, yeah, I've just been busy.

Well, wheat free helped a little, but not an awful lot. I wondered then whether I was eating not quite enough mushy white stuff and a bit too much insoluble, so I've back-tracked a bit. Was going very well, especially with the porridge oats in the morning, until today - feel a bit more bloated and gassy, but that could just be my body trying to adust to the upped soluble fibre.

While I was totally wheat free I'm afraid I became a bit complacent and ate a couple of triggers, french fries and cereal too high in insoluble. Suffered the worst gut spasms I ever remember which were so bad they left me feeling - well, bruised is the only word I can think of - I could barely sit down or stand up all the next day - OUCH!!!

So now I'm back to being extra good. Clearly, I was hoping wheat was my only problem (alas not) which would be easier to handle than IBS generally, but never mind. So it seems I can handle small amounts of wheat as long as I don't go overboard.

Anyway, enough about me.....
I suppose carpets make sense more over there if it's dry. It's generally very humid here, which makes it colder when its cold and yukky when it's hot and a lot of (especially older) houses tend to suffer from damp in the winter.

Just thinking of my old student digs .... in Hull (why did I ever pick there with my lack of body heat!!!) which is on the North-East coast of England. Bbrrrrr... the permanent cold and smell of damp....once my friend Jo came to stay and we slept in the same (single) bed with our socks, coats, hats, scarves and gloves on in bed cos it was sooooo cold. I don't miss those days at all!!!! Would've killed for a bit of carpet in the old bathroom then!!!

Thanks for asking
Shells

I so don't understand the carpet/bathroom thing! All you need is one guy who's had a few too many and boy is it gross!

Hard floors and fluffy mats that you can wash is the way to go I think! And fluffy slippers so your toes are toasty anyway!
