How does an IBSer know for sure if they are lactose intolerant or the symptoms are from the fat content in the lactose food they are eating??? I love cheese and ate it and ate it a lot, but how do I know it is the lactose and not the fat content that makes me sick? Is there a way to tell for sure??? Same with pretty much all milk products, the good ones are high in fat??? Help..........

cjc, Hi! I have always eaten fat free dairy (skim milk, fat free cheese and yogurt), and so when I stopped recently eating these, I am now noticing my stomach is hurting much less and is not nearly as gaseous and bloating. So for ME, I know it wasn't the fat content of the dairy, because it had no fat in it. Maybe you should try eating the fat free dairy and seeing if this hurts your stomach the same as the high fat stuff does. If it still hurts, you should probably try cutting out the dairy all together. Can't hurt...

I think Melissa has answered this "spot on." That was pretty much my situation as well; I always ate the low-fat variety, especially Kraft's reduced fat cheddar; LOVED the stuff, bought it by the barrel-full. ..... Wouldn't go near the stuff now!
As you opposed to soy? Does it not agree with you? I love all soy products, especially vanilla Soy Dream "milk." Yum. It makes the best cocoa, and it's marvelous in waffles and pancakes. And don't get me started on their mocha fudge -- you know me and my mocha fudge, Girlfriend! (I was really bad yesterday -- I had TWO SCOOPS! Don't tell Ruchie.)
Okay, so some of the cheeses aren't that great -- but some ARE. Soy mozarella is fabulous on pizza, and soy cheddar is terrific in Kree's mac & cheese. Lets not forget the sliced provolone. Great in samiches with turkey ham and a little Durkee's sauce.
Damn I'm getting hungry!

Yep, you really need to give it up! I was actually tested, in the hospital, for lactose intolerance. the test came back negative but every time I try something dairy I BLOAT up like a big balloon and get very gassey! I used to LOVE cheese but just can't have it anymore.
I like the rice mozzerralla better than the soy, but keep trying different brands until you find a suitable replacement!

My test also came back negative but I KNOW I'm lactose intollerant. When I eat other bad IBS foods I get hours of cramps and then D. When I eat dairy I get more quicker and different feeling D. Hard to explain but I know they are different things going on.

In my 20's I was first told I had IBS. I was able to eat fat free milk produce, cheese, ect. Today, no. I was told it's the enzymes in the milk, and cheeses. Your body changes, ect.
I to love cheese, and pizza. Bevrs know that I just had a grilled chicken sandwich on sub roll with soy mozz. and it was great.
Try the differant soy cheeses. Your teast buds have to get used to the differant foods now.
Remember when you first tryed skim milk? I know I hated it, but when I got used to it, it was good. Tryed going back to reg. milk, and it was to heavy.
Same thing here. You need to give it some time, and you'll get use to it.
I like the Veggie Soy cheeses. Tast like the milk cheese.
Hope this help.
Christine

Thanks for the posts, I have pretty much stopped eating cheese a long time ago, every once in a while I'll slip a low fat or no fat slice on something. I do drink Lactose free milk and it doesn't seem to bother me??? I don't drink it by the glass, I use it in cereal and my tea and I cook with it? I didn't care for the soy milk, I just bought some Rice milk to try, can't find rice cheese, just soy, rice, oat combined. I do know that if anyone has a Kroger grocery store around their area, they have a fabulous, organic, glutean free, soy etc. area and it's all together, so you don't have to go all over the entire store looking for stuff, I found the no pudge brownie mix, which I've never seen before and I found some fabulous frozen waffles that are wheat free and low fat......I never shopped there, but I'll be a regular there now.

Hiya, I don't know if this helps (someone mighta said something along these lines already!) but I have a friend who was convinced that she was lactose intolerant and that is what was giving her stomach troubles. Then her tummy started acting up, milk or no milk. She went to the doctor and got sent for a lactose test which she said was blowing into a tube, drinking something and then blowing into the tube again. The results came back and Suprise! she isn't lactose intolerant. Turns out she DOES have IBS, though. So apparently, she has the enzymes that digest lactose (which apparently people with simple lactose intolerance don't produce, but can take supplements) but her IBS won't let her near anything with milk in it. Weird, huh? If it's not one thing, it's another. Her theory is that people are actually not designed to digest any milk products (she studied up!) and shouldn't be having it anyway... I don't know about you, it doesn't make me feel any better when I _really_ want a pizza but... --Steph
