Beano and Other Digestive Enzymes?

Does anyone know if it's ok to take Beano as well as other digestive enzymes at the same time? I picked up Beano to help with the foods that really give me trouble, but I know it's all enzymes and I already take a digestive enzyme before my heavier meals and I'm not sure if it's ok to mix them. The one I take is Jamieson Digestive Enzyme and it includes the following: Papain 50mg, Bromelain 30mg, Lipase 30mg, Amylase 50mg, Lactase 30mg, Cellulase 15mg. Calcium gluconate to neutralize excess acid, Peppermint Leaf and Fennel complex to calm upset stomach.
If anyone knows if this would be ok that'd be great!
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I don't know the answer to your question -- actually, I have a question to your question.

Why do you want to take both? I mean, if you're already taking a digestive enzyme, why then do you want the Beano at the same time?

As an alternative suggestion, you might want to reconsider the size of that pot of beans you're eating!

I don't touch beans! Regular bread seems to make me gassy, I don't even want to think about what beans would do to me! The reason I was thinking about taking them both is that they have different digestive enzymes in them. The one that I've been taking does help, it certainly helps with overall stomach cramping and upset, but doesn't seem to do anything for the gas. I still get horribly gassy! And I figure that's specifically what Beano is designed for, so I thought maybe I'd try them both. But you know when you have stomach problems, it's not always good to pump your body full of pills either, so who knows?

galactosidase which is simply another digestive enzyme like the ones you take but are for such gassy foods listed here:
web page

I've been doing this now for 6 months.........taking both a digestive enzyme or 2 with a few Beanos with normal size meals. Since I take a probiotic that suggests taken with meals that gets taken at the same time. It could be this combination---- besides taking either acacia or sol. fiber tabs right before a meal, and keeping the diet low fat with a high soluble fiber food base--------is the reason why I'm doing so very well.

Bean-zyme is a less expensive galactosidase supplement you can order on line. Do a search.

"GAS", a sublingual tab by Hylands can be taken after the meal if the gas starts and you'd forgotten to take the Beano at the beginning of the meal.

Im curious because I want to look into them but am not sure what to even look for. All I know is there are live enzymes and dead ones-which I dont want. Beano helps, but the mornings are still kinda gassy, and I dont like living my morning off GasX or(at the worst times) Immodium.
Thanks

Joe

Thanks for the info! That's exactly what I was hoping. I love my regular digestive enzymes for just digestion, but they do nothing for gas so hopefully the Beano will work. I feel so silly, I can remember just a few years back being in a drug store with my Dad and feeling sooo embaressed because he was buying beano (typical teenager) and look at me now! It must be karma

If you need info on probiotics to help you make a choice, here is a start. web page

A lot of folks on this board swear by Jarro...by doing a search you can see what they had to say. I don't take it because I can't get it locally and would have to order it to be shipped to me. I personally take Ultra Flora Plus DF (that means Dairy Free) by Metagenics. It's hard to find at a lot of places but can be gotten via the net as well.

If you start taking ones you get at the local health food store check for an expiration date and make sure they are refrigerated and store them that way at home too. In a pinch I've bought all sorts of different brands. They seem to be ok.........I just have to take more of them to equal the amount of live culures I have in my regular brand.

Hi, Joe,

Just curious, why don't you like taking Gas-X and Imodium? If they help, what's wrong with it? The way I look at it, it's no different from a diabetic taking insulin or someone with pneumonia taking penicillin. We have a physical illness -- why shouldn't we take our meds?

Just a thought.

PS. I still haven't tried Beano even tho a lot of folks on the board swear by it. Would you recommend it? When do you take it and how often? Thanks.

That is so funny! I totally relate. I have fibromyalgia and ten years ago when my cousin was diagnosed with it, I thought, "Ah, she's just neurotic." Now I have it!! I guess the moral of the story is be careful what you scoff at, it may come back to haunt you!!

My doctor put me on VSL#3. He said it was truly the best around. Hard for me to know if it's making a difference - I'm definitely doing better but I think the diet is the biggest factor. Also, VSL#3 is quite pricey - $3 a day.

See there website - VSL3.com
