Hello everybody I recently came across this site and have to say I am glad I am not the only person in the world with this problem! This post isnt really about recipes I just didn't know which forum to post this to. I am 20 years old recently graduated college and hearing my parents fight a lot gives me stress and makes my stomach hurt pretty much 24/7 the really bad thing is I am currently looking for a job and bc of that I have to rely on my mother for food. I asked her if she could start buying the food u talked about on the website and not the food that would hurt my stomach worse and it does but she doesnt listen its like she doesnt care or beleive me. She says its impossible to have a stomach ache all the time. I have been to 3 or 4 doctors and specialists took all the tests and pills and they have done nothing. I am not sure what to do! I want to move out asap bc I hate the town I live in and my parents are driving me nuts. Until I can afford to buy my own food I was wondering if I should just drink a lot of the herbal tea you suggested and hope that works for now or what I should do. Please repl y a.s.a.p. thank you for your time and have a great day.

Welcome! Sounds like you're having a rough time...and stress is a HUGE trigger!!
But you are looking for solutions, so....

Have you offered to go shopping with your mom, instead of just telling her what to buy and having her not listen? And being on this diet is not necessarily more expensive--pasta is cheap and there are endless possibilities! What kind of food does your family normally eat? Can you think of ways you might adapt it so you are eating safely?
Have you shown your mom this website? That way she'd see that lots of people have this problem and it's not just you being whiny. Then she'd understand that if you ate properly you wouldn't have a tummy ache all the time.
The herbal tea will help you, but really you've got to change your whole diet to be stable and symptom free. Also, if your mom is willing to buy the tea, why doesn't she want to buy pasta, french bread, fresh veggies, and applesauce?

Also, do you exercise at all? Yoga doesn't cost anything nor does taking a jog or a walk.

Try not to get too down on your situation and do some relaxation--I know it's hard, but the less stressed you feel the better your tummy will be!

Hmmm...your Mum needs her head checked. Unfortunately, you can't get a diagnosis of IBS without having had a colonoscopy, so make sure you have one (if you haven't already). You'll need to get a referral to a GI doc for that.

If you can afford it, get IBS: The first Year. This is really helpful and has some great stuff to show non-believers!

In the meantime, drink the herbal teas, get some soluble fibre supplement (I think Heather's Acacia is best) and avoid the triggers. If your Mum gives them to you, don't eat them and fill up on bread, potatoes, etc.

How about offering to cook and cooking an IBs-safe dinner for everyone?

Good luck!

sounds like your family could really benefit from your new diet--for their own health! I know it's hard to radically change how your family eats, but maybe you can start them out on the path toward healthier eating. Start small, like instead of meat sauce on pasta try a tomato sauce, and instead of garlic bread with cheese and butter, have plain fresh french bread (and soak up the sauce with it). And stop cooking veggies with butter and start steaming them and flavoring with spices. Or make stir-fry and your parents can have meat in it if they want and you can have chicken or tofu.
good for you that you're exercising! let us know how things go

Welcome to the boards.

Sorry you're having such a bummer of a time. It's hard when you depend on others for food!

You got great advice from the others... I would just see what you can do about having french bread and plain pasta around all the time so you can at least eat that! If you have a little money, you may have to sacrifice spending it on fun stuff and spend it on bread and safe stuff instead.... just 'til you get a job. Get really familiar with how to make a baked potato (sweet potatoes are good baked the same way, too. Put a little honey on it!). I don't see why your Mom won't help you at least that way: by having potatoes and pasta available. (In fact, it's probably already in the house already! If you're not sure how to cook that stuff, contact us again and we'll tell you how... At one time we all had no clue in the kitchen! No worries.)

Just make sure to be polite when you decline their fatty foods- don't lecture, just say "I'm trying something to see if it helps my stomach." And cook the stuff yourself! It's tough. I remember going head-to-head with my folks about tons of stuff and it was a pain. I should have learned from my brother. He was always polite but did what he needed to do anyway! It was much less painful for him.

Let us know what else you need to know! Good luck and keep us posted.

PS: We all believe you! We had/have stomach pains all the time, too. Sorry your mom thinks it's fiction. If she were to ever see the boards, I hope she'd come with an open mind.
