I am really stressed out right now about missing a class tonight. I started a course last week but couldn't attend the first class due to an IBS attack and I'm supposed to be attending the 2nd class tonight but my stomach has begun to flare and I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. It's a 1/2 hour drive and then an hour wait for the class to even begin...and then a 3 hour lecture...I just don't know if I can do it. If I don't go then that means I've missed the first 2 classes and this course only has 7!! STRESS!!

Could you leave home later so you don't have to wait for an hour? That would at least cut down on some of your worrying time, if you decide to go. Have you got any meds? Antispasmodics and Immodium (if you're D) will help. I always feel icky before my evening class--just the thought of sitting in class when my sypmtoms are worse in the evening anyway makes me even sicker! Yep, it is stressful. Try to relax, breathe!! Eat some very safe foods if you can and bring some with you if that will help. And sit by an exit in the lecture hall, just in case!

First off all, TRY (easier said than done) not to get so upset, that will only make your tummy worse!!
Have you tried talking to the professor to let him know of your tummy problems. Maybe just knowing that its ok to get up and leave to go to the bathroom during class will help take some of the stress off?

I agree with Michele, I would talk to the prof. I've warned my profs before that I might have to run out of the room, and once I really did have to and spent a while in the bathroom, and they've all been really good about it. I kow it's not fun to be stuck in a public restroom like that, but the possibility of missing class is obviously bothering you (as it would me, too) so maybe that would be the best solution. I also agree that it's good to bring some really safe high soluble fiber snacks with you to much on in case you do have problems, like pretzels or rice cakes. Good luck, and I hope things work out for you!

Hey, most schools are obligated to make accomadations for health issues if you tell your professor. That said, 2 out of seven classes is a lot to miss... can you withdraw now and take it in a later semester where you might be feeling better?
I can defintely sympathize though... I'm never allowed to miss any classes no matter HOW bad I'm feeling. It bites. Of course, some of them I'm teaching.

I finally did calm down and made it to class AND I spoke to my prof. about my illness and explained that I may need to leave the class throughout the lecture. He was very understanding and after I sat down in class and stopped worrying my stomach calmed down and I felt much better. I also had some soluble fibre to snack on. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice!!

Good for you! Professors are usually pretty nice, except for the ones who really aren't. (Wow, how to say something without saying anything...)
