I just want to say what a great website this is. I have been suffering with IBS for almost two years now and I didn't know excatly was it was. Then in November of last year I ended up getting diverticultis. Then I found this website and ordered the first IBS book, the fennel tea and the peppermint pills. All that stuff has helped alot. I am now learning what I need to stay away from and the receipes are great in the book. I love trying them out. Thanks to Heather for doing this website and creating the book to help everyone.

I too have diverticulosis. I had my first diverticulitis attack about 2 years ago and my second a year ago. Seems I just couldn't stop eating seeds and nuts. (Unfortunately, I finally cut them out of my diet. Rats. )

So how are you doing now? What are you doing to prevent another diverticulitis attack?

Thanks for your kind words. This really is an incredible place to be. I've gotten SOOO much better since I came on board.

Welcome Mitch!

Bev

Thats great to hear that you have gotten alot better. That gives me hope.

I am going to cut out the seeds and have done so already. Its hard because I love tomatoes and cucumbers but don't want to go through what I went through before.

What type of symptoms did you have. My pain was on the right side and it took them three months to figure out what it was. My doctor finally gave me an antibotic and it worked. My pain was so bad I couldn't even walk. I had to take so much time off of work because of it. Then my IBS started acting up really bad. So I went to my Gastro doctor and he wasn't much help just gave me another anti-spasmatic pill which does help a little. The peppermint and the fennel help alot more.

If you have any more suggestions as to what I can also do to not get another attack it would be very helpful.

Thanks!!

Hi again, Mitch,

Yeah, I know it's a hassle cutting all those seeds out of tomatoes! Groan. I buy the Italian tomatoes because there are less seeds, and I cut around the outside, then toss the centers (where the seeds are). That way I get to have some tomato without worry.

I gave up cucumbers entirely.

Hubby's favorite food is poopy seed muffins. Unfortunately, I cook only one way -- the IBS way -- so hubby has his favorite muffins at the coffee shop.

I eat NO seeds of any kind and NO NUTS. Oh, and I do love my cashews so! RATS.

When I have a diverticulitis attack, it's way down by my crotch. I'm doubled over in pain and have to hold onto the furniture in order to move around. It's excruciating. The first time I ended up in the hospital, and they did a catscan and found it. They gave me a pain killer (a shot) that my body did not like, and I spent my entire stay in the bathroom, throwing up. Not a pretty picture. Antibiotics killed the infection and I was fine in a week's time.

The second diverticulitis attack was at home; I knew by then that the attack wasn't IBS and was pretty sure it was diverticulitis, so I called the doc. He prescribed Flagyl, which did wonders and got rid of it right away. I was on my feet in a few days.

When I had my diverticulitis attacks, antispasmotic drugs that I take for my IBS (Hycoscyamine and Donnatal) didn't help at all. Flagyl was my salvation.

(Quote) "I went to my Gastro doctor and he wasn't much help" (Unquote) We hear that on these boards all the time. I just don't understand it, but it's just so typical. I need to find a new GI -- and so do you.

Bev.

P.S.: You might check out the peppermint capsules from Heather. She says they work better for her as an anti-spasmotic than Donnatal (my fave), believe it or not!

Welcome! We're glad to hear that you've found this website helpful. A quick question, have you been diagnosed with IBS? It is so important to get a proper diagnosis as IBS symptoms can mean other health problems. If you don't have a dianosis, go to your Doc and insist onthe tests. It's good you got the div. diagnosis - look for ArtKen - a very nice man and he has it too.

Hi there again. Your symptoms sound excatly like mine. I couldn't even walk or make it from my bedroom to the kitchen without a lot of pain. My doctor gave me Sulfa because I am also on Coumadin so I can't take alot of other medicine.

I tried the Donntal and I didn't like those. I am now taking Robinul-Forte. They seem to help. I did get the peppermint pills and the fennel tea.

Its just so hard to know what I can eat and what I can't. I hate feeling like this when I get an attack. Like right now and I am having one. Though by now I seem to know what to do and stop it from happening.

I just decided to stay away from tomatoes I just thought it would be easier that way. It is hard to shop for two different people. My niece lives with me and she can eat just about anything and of course I can't. I get food that she likes and then for dinners I fix food the IBS way and she is coming around a little.

This gastro doctor I have is alot better than one I have seen before so I will continue to see him. He was a little more help when I was first diagnosed with IBS.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Yes I have been diagonsed with IBS. I was diagnosed in October of 2002. Since then I have had a hysterectomy and also had diverticultis. I just tried eating right at least I thought was right. But now I know. When I found this website I couldn't believe how Heather explained everything and it was excatly what I go through. I even had my mom read it so she can understand a little what happens to me when I do have an attack.
