HI guys

Besides the cramping in the lower ab area with D, I just started some new symptoms of gas, bloating and tenderness/achiness/tightness/occasional pain in the upper mid abdominal area (right under the rib cage). I don't think this is GERD or heartburn (or it is unlike heartburn that I've had in the past).

Is IBS just associated with just lower ab pain or do some of you have this upper pain also? Although I'm not in acute pain, these new symptoms are causing a lot of anxiety for me.

Thanks
janet

Hi Janet,

What brought this on all of a sudden? You were doing just great the other day! RATS.

Was it the zucchini you had the other day? Maybe you started back on the insolubles too soon. You were doing so well!

I've heard this "under the rib cage" thing mentioned before in here. Did you do a search? I think it's common, although I've never experienced it.

There's that !&%$!! anxiety again. Boy, don't we all hate that?! Girlfriend, did you get Michael's program yet? Have you started it? I SOOO know how you feel! Yesterday I started feeling crampy "way down low" -- where I always get sharp pains when I have a diverticulitis attack. By bedtime the cramping turned to sharp pains. I started to panic. "Oh no! It's diverticulitis! I'm going to end up in the hospital again! Should I take my Flagyl?" The sweats started, yet my body was cold. It was a damn panic attack. I HATE that! I took one of my "cramp pills" (Hyoscyamine) and luckily, by the time I fell asleep, the cramping went away. Phew.

How are you feeling now? Jump in a nice hot tub and soak for awhile. Take some lovely camomile tea and put a hot pad on your tummy. Go back to bed with a trashy novel -- and know that we're thinking of you. We'll be glad when you finally get some meds, eh?

Let us know how you do.

Your friend,
Bev

Hello,
I actually get this type of pain quite often as well. I too don't think it's gerd or heartburn...it just somehow feels different. I tend to get cramping in my lower abdomen and then maybe an hour or so later it starts up high...and the upper pain is just awful...I find it makes it hard to breathe and everything. I can't remember for sure but I thought that I read somewhere that part of the colon extends to just under the ribcage on the left side and this can cause that type of pain...but I'm not positive.
I've found that heating pads or something similar really help, as well as some fennel tea to reduce the gas.
Hope you feel better soon!
Kelly

That can indicate a gallbladder problem also. When I had pain up there - they checked my gallbladder.

I get that when I'm really gassy.

Think of the shape of the large intestine to get your reasoning..... It starts on your lower right hand side, travels up towards your ribs, across your body and then back down towards the left hip where it it nears its...er... end.

I'm not sure about your pains, but mine are right there in that section of the large intestine-- the transverse section.

I used to get these weird gas "flutters" in that spot, too, right after I was diagnosed (but before I found Heather's diet)! They were freaky! It felt like I had a butterfly in there. How strange!

Anyway, at least you're not alone with the weird pain locales!
