HI All

Seeing the doc again tomorrow. I have IBS d and never have been prescribed meds. Last month, I started getting gas, bloating tightness/pain so I saw the doc two weeks ago and he prescribed heartburn Rx which didn't help.

I have a referral to a gastro doc, but in the meantime, I would like to have some meds "just in case." It seems like most docs are prescribing a smooth muscle relaxant. Do you think Levsin (hyoscyamine generic)is a good choice?

I am experiencing a lot of anxiety regarding the change in symptoms and I know that is making the IBS worse. What anxiety med would you recommend I suggest to the doc? Just something mild, to take the "edge" off the worrying. I was thinking of ativan (generic lorazepam).

Anyway, thought it would be helpful to have some suggestions for the doc as he seems determined to treat me for heartburn!

thanks janet

I can only say from personal experience that Levsin did exactly nothing for me. I'm on a combo of Nexium (I do have acid problems) and Zelnorm now... of course, all of these drugs work totally differently for all of us, so who can say. Good luck!

I tried levsin, and it gave me really horrible dry mouth and drowsiness. I take robinul forte now and its side effects are much milder.

Neither of them work all that well for me, but they do help somewhat.

Hi Girlfriend!

I just sent you an e-mail and answered this in it. As you know, I am also a D. I have taken Nu-Lev, Hyoscyamine, Lotromin, and Donnatal. Nu-Lev did nothing. Lotromin also did nothing for the cramps, but did take care of the diarrhea. Hyoscyamine works if my cramps aren't bad, but when they're really, REALLY bad, I take the Donnatal.

I keep a supply of all these meds and some Equalactin and Fennel tea in a little bag in my purse; I call it my emergency medicine cabinet. I very seldom need to resort to it, but I feel real good having my "security blanket" with me at all times.

As for anxiety meds, Michael's program is SOOOO much better than any prescription!

Good luck tomorrow -- and keep us posted!

Your friend,
Bev

The smooth muscle relaxants are really a personal thing - you have to try them out and see if they help you. I take Spasmonal Forte (Alverine Citrate) whih helps me.

For anxiety, try St. John's wort and Bach's Rescue Remedy. Bananas (weirdly) can help. Also loads of people here seem to like the hypno. I think you'd be better off trying to sort it out that way that resorting to meds which can give you side effects (I think we all have enough on our plates as it is!).

Good luck.

HI Linz

I've never heard of Bach's Rescue Remedy before but it sounds like what I'm looking for. Have you tried it? Does it work for you?

I would prefer to go the "natural" route rather than prescription anxiety meds if at all possible.

thanks Janet

Rescue Remedy is pretty much a bunch of flower extracts all put together. I have tried it for a while. It does work for relieving stress but is not a miracle worker. Passion Flower is a pretty good calming extract. Passion flower should be talked about by an expert though. All I know is what I read. From my expiernces it has helped though. I would take it only when I need it

Rescue Remedy is quite well known over here - it's the kind of thing celebs swear by for flying, etc. It's flower extracts as Chris said, so pretty natural. My Mum's found it helpful.
