I just wanted to let everyone know that I now know from experience how dangerous MSG can be to IBSers. My mom made chicken soup on Sunday night. She was going to use the chicken broth she'd been using for years, but I recently noticed that it contained MSG, so I asked her to use my organic broth instead and she kindly obliged. I had it for dinner that night and felt fabulous. Then last night she wanted to add some more broth so there would enough leftovers for the whole family. She had an opened can of her broth in the fridge and asked if I thought it would be okay if she used it, and stupidly I said sure, go ahead. Then last night about an hour after dinner, boom, I got the first attack I've had in months. Luckily I headed it off with Pepto and Bentyl, so it never got to full-fledged D, but I felt like garbage and still do today.
To make a long story short, the only thing I can possibly think of that was different was the MSG in the chicken broth. So if you've been putting off buying organic broth, please learn from my experience and do it! I will never underestimate the dangers of MSG again.

Wow. That's very interesting, Kree. That was a good test.
MSG apparently doesn't bother me, because it's in the new frozen Gorton's grilled salmon filets that I've just fallen in love with, and I've had no problems (so far)....
Thanks for the "heads up!"

That's good that it doesn't bother you, Bev. I had never noticed it to either, but I guess I'm more sensative than I had realized. Maybe there's less of it in your salmon filets... who knows.

I know all too well about MSG affecting IBS. I avoid it like a plag!!! Another interesting fact about MSG is my ADHD son's behavior gets out of control after eating MSG. It was out of my house before I knew how it affected my IBS.
Sorry you had an attack after months of attack free. Hope you are feeling better.

WOW, Barbara, WOW! Gee, now I don't know about that salmon. Hmm ..... maybe I'd better pass on them after all. They didn't bother me before, but maybe I was just lucky....??

Wow Barb, that's scary that it bothered your son's ADHD too! Why the heck do they feel the need to put junk like that in our food??

What's the full, scientific name for MSG? What sort of food products is this added to? The only time I've heard it referenced is in Chinese restaurants....
Thanks!

Monosodium Glutimate. I'm really surprised it's still added in our food. There was a big hullaballoo about it in the '70's -- and, frankly, I thought it had been banned!
Yeah, I heard that it's added to Chinese food. I was surprised to see that it's in the BRAND NEW just-on-the-market Gorton's frozen grilled salmon filets that I have fallen in love with. RATS!

Thanks, Kree. But it's my fault. I should have read the ingredients on the package before I BOUGHT OUT THE STORE!
Well, hubby can eat it; he doesn't have IBS. I'll just go in the garden and eat worms.

The correct term is Monosodium Glutamate. Do some searching on the net and you'll find tens of thousands of sites relating to it, most of them negative. Personally, it affects me very badly also.

The first time I heard about the dangers of MSG was before my first pregnancy. The experts say pregnant women should avoid nutri sweet and MSG, because of possible harm to the baby. If additives can harm a developing baby, what do additives do to our bodies over a long period of time? I'm not a fan of chemically made foods.

Kree, I totally relate. I'm so sensitive to MSG that to prove it to my hubby, we did a taste test with two cans of tuna, one packed in water and one packed in vegetable broth with MSG. I did fine with the one packed in water, and reacted badly to the other even tho the liquid was drained off in both cases.
Another thing about MSG is that the food industry is allowed to call it a bunch of different things. Even "natural flavor" in the ingredients is usually really MSG. Check those websites mentioned by someone else for the full list of MSG aliases.
Why do food companies use it? Profits. It makes everything taste better (it's a flavor enhancer) and if something tastes better, you're more likely to keep buying it. I've learned the hard way that if a store-bought processed food (like a soup or a frozen meal) tastes too good to be true, it's because it's full of MSG.

Wow, that is a pretty powerful experiment. Same with me and the soup, that was the only difference. We should publish our results, lol.

That's scary! I thought they had to list it as an ingredient. Grr... they certainly don't make things easy, do they??

Hi Barb, my son has ADHA also and about 4 years ago our doctor put Brian (son) on a specific diet that cut out MSG along with all artifical preservative, artifical colors and flavors, no caffine or chocolate and no tomatoes or tomatoe product It has made a HUGE difference in his hyperness. When he does have some of these Items he gets so out of control it is almost unbearable. We allow him to have 7-up or sprite and I have substituted carob powder for cocoa and the carob chips for regular chips in cookies and such. MSG gives me migraines and same with Brian. In little kids it will give them stomachaches and nausua. Hope this helps Gail
