Hi Bev,

Just wondering. I bought the Equalactin. I haven't tried it yet but was wondering do you take this before or after you eat something that you know will bother you? I'm IBS-D and on the rare occasion when I'm eating away from home I don't eat anything because I don't want to get sick. The doctor didn't give me any medication to ease these situations. Thanks.

Oooh, I love Equalactin. It's a wonder drug for me. I too am a "D" person.

I depend on it a lot, for different occasions. For example, hubby and I like the restaurant near us, but my favorite meal is their sweet-n-sour pineapple chicken which is served like a casserole with rice, Chinese peas, red bell peppers, and of course fresh pineapple. YUM! At the table, before the meal, I had my "Tummy Mint" tea with an Equalactin. Then I had a roll with no butter, then my meal, followed by the absolutely most magnificent egg roll I've ever eaten (no doubt deep-fat fried). I had no problem at all, thanks to the Equalactin.

Whenever I go anywhere in the car to a place I am not familiar with (and thus fearful of no bathrooms nearby), I take my Equalactin as "security."

Last, but most importantly, when I have a really bad attack, I take the Equalactin FIRST, then I take my Donnatal. The Equalactin works immediately, whereas the Donnatal takes at least an hour to kick in.

I don't know why it works for me better than others (I used to take Citrucel capsules), but it just does. I don't think of it as a fiber supplement as I do the acacia; I think of it as my "cramp pill." It's certainly my security blanket; I keep a supply in the medicine cabinet in my purse.

Your doctor didn't give you any meds at all? What do you do when you have a serious attack, Girlfriend?!? I'd ask him for some Donnatal or at least some Hyoscyamine. I take them only on emergencies; it's great to have them when I need them!

Thanks for the info on the Equalactin, I'll have to try it out and see. I haven't been out to eat in I can't remember when. I cook everything at home.

I've been extremely sick for the last 8 months or so, and only during the past couple of weeks since starting on the benefiber and your recommended Jarro Dophilous and eating limited foods right now and I finally gave up coffee (I know sometimes I'm a glutton for punishment with the coffee) have I started to feel a little better.

Last month I went to a specialist had every test in creation done only to reconfirm IBS and GERD. He gave me protonix for the GERD and said to see how it goes in a month. I told him that is only for acid reflex and not IBS -- but you know how the doctors are. I'm going to make a follow up appointment and ask about the the meds.

Thanks again for all the help.

You gave up coffee! Good for you, Barbara! How long has it been? It's been 2-1/2 months for me so far. We already talked about this, didn't we? See what happens when you get old?

Did we also talk about coffee "ice cream"? I hope I'm not being repetitious -- but my fave dessert is Soy Dream frozen non-dairy Mocha Fudge. Oooooh Baby! It tastes more like coffee than chocolate and does in fact contain coffee, but it's way down on the ingredient list. It doesn't bother my tummy and really satisfies my coffee craving. I have to drive all the way down to the health food store to get it, but it's well worth the trip!

About those egg rolls. Safeway carries a brand of frozen egg rolls -- I wish I could remember the name -- that is IBS-safe; they're not deep-fat fried. Okay, they're not as good as I get at our favorite restaurant, but pretty darn close. I have two of them with some white rice; yummy!

Gee, for some reason I'm getting real hungry....

I have up coffee 1 month ago today! I miss it sooo much. But actually it really does make a difference. Tea just isn't the same though!

I really have to check out your Soy Dream Mocha Fudge. Would be nice to have both coffee and ice cream again! I have to find a supermarket that carries both Soy Dream and egg rolls and also that pizza you talk about (I'm in Brooklyn, NY) and there is only a tiny Key Food that hardly carries anything by me.

Next time you see the name of the eggrolls, let me know.

Thanks,
Barbara

Hi Bevrs

How is Donnatal and Hyoscyamine different than Imodium?

Thanks, Janet

Hi Janet,

Donnatal is pretty strong stuff. My GI wouldn't give it to me, claiming it is addictive. It's most definitely not addictive to me because my little bottle has lasted me over 3 years, way beyond it's expiration date! My regular doctor gave it to me.

Donnatal takes care of the cramps as well as the D. Immodium has never done that for me. Ditto with the Hyoscyamine.

I take the Hyoscyamine when my cramps aren't serious; when I'm doubled over, I take the Donnatal.

What do you take?

Bev

I'm going to Safeway tomorrow, and I'll check out those egg rolls and get back with you on it.

That "ice cream" is incredible stuff; I gotta warn ya, it's hard to stop. I have to limit myself to one scoop -- because it's a little more than our 25% fat limit. Nevertheless, it definitely satisfies my craving for coffee (although I think by now I've pretty much kicked my habit). I know what you mean, tea just really does NOT cut it.

I'll get back with you tomorrow, Girlfriend!

Hi Bev

Thanks for the quick response. Although I've had IBS for 30 years, I've only seen a doc two times for it. Once as a teen when I was "diagnosed" (no tests) and about ten years ago when I was referred to a gastroenterologist and he ran all the tests and reconfirmed that I had IBS. At that time, I think he recommended a daily antibiotic (???) which I declined.

So BH (before Heather ) I just took a lactase before meals with dairy and imodium when I had attacks.

My IBS has gotten worse recently so I just started the process of being referred to the gastro doc again. Just wanted to know what meds were available so I can ask him about them.

Your posts have been MOST helpful. Truly. I just started the Jarro two days ago and will try the Equalactin next. There is so much info out there that it gets confusing at times. That's why I really appreciate when you name specifics and exactly what you do when you get an attack.
Thanks! Janet

As promised, I'm back; just returned from Safeway where I got all the info on the egg rolls for you. You may not want them after all, Barbara.

Here's the good news: they're Pagoda brand all white meat chicken egg rolls from the freezer section.

Now the bad: one package contains 4 egg rolls, and each egg roll is 37% fat (so you gotta "dilute" the percentage with some plain white rice). They apparently ARE fried, and contain egg, soy and wheat.

Thanks so much.

Maybe I'll try them one weekend after I'm a little more stable and see what happens. I just love chinese food.

Thanks, Barbara!

You know, the funny thing about the egg rolls is that I really don't like Chinese food, not at all! The only thing I ever liked was cashew chicken, and I don't think that's really Chinese.

But these egg rolls ..... YUM!

Hope you get stable soon.

Bev
