I finally got around to ordering from the catalog and got 3 flours, the baking powder, some sugar, the garlic peeler, the silpat mat, and the canister for the baking powder. I've been thinking about the bread machine in the catalog. Have you tried any of their scone or muffin mixes, and do you have canisters for your flour? Do you keep your flour in the freezer or just out? I could spend way too much money on this stuff! This is the kind of shopping I like!

Hey Pretty Lady!

Wow, you know how to SHOP, Girlfriend!

No, I've never tried their scones or mixes (although they sound yummy). I keep my flour in air-tight clear glass decanters with the rubber gaskets and wire clamps. Flour that I don't use often goes in the fridge, and if it's been in the fridge a long time, then I toss it. It's just me -- but I don't like to keep anything that's old (except hubby of course).

I think you'll probably go through all that flour pretty fast when you get your bread machine. (You'll need to get their yeast, though.) Are you going to buy the machine from them? It's a little costly; you can do a lot better with a Breadman Ultimate -- if you like it of course. I got mine on sale at Bed, Bath & Beyond; I think we paid $99. Check it out on the web first, though: Breadman

This is the kind of shopping I like too, Girlfriend!

I have a bread machine now, but have not been happy with the quality of the bread. Also, if the power goes off or it gets accidentally unplugged, it just starts all over. I haven't decided if I will get another one or not, but the one in the catalog supposedly makes better bread than homemade.
Hey, did you ever get an answer to your other pizza options question? I thought of you tonight when I bought some little pizza crusts, made some homemade sauce, put some portabellos and soy cheese on, and baked for 10 minutes. Really easy! Also Heather has some recipes for pizza in her book.

Hey Pretty Lady!

You're so sweet to think of me and my pizza. Yes, I have really gotten into it. I make my own AND when I go down to the health food store, I stock up on Amy's frozen soy cheese pizza. But you know, my home made has gotten pretty good -- the other day when I was at the health food store, I started for Amy's, then I thought, nah, my home made is better -- so I bought another pint of Mocha Fudge instead.

I'm so bad.

Sounds like a great plan to me! I would do more ice cream eating if it didn't hurt my teeth so much! Glad you have perfected the pizza baking.
Which yeast should I buy from the catalog? HAve you tried their cream of tartar?

Hey, Girlfriend, you're really getting in this, ain'tcha?! I love it. I'm also glad you like The Bakers Catalogue; it's a great place to shop.

I have not tried their Cream of Tartar because I prefer Bakewell Cream, the Maine equivalent of cream of tartar. It's terrific (see pg. 11 of their catalogue). I don't use regular baking powder because of the aluminum content.

As for the yeast, I'd talk to them about the kind of bread you're making. I like Fleischmann's and Red Star, but I see they also have Nevada Gold, "for optimum rise in high-sugar yeast breads and sourdough." Interesting; I just may have to give it a try.

Let me know what you decide about the bread machine.

Yeah, I was looking at the Bakewell cream of tartar. Do you have the stainless steel canisters for spices?

I have the stainless steel canisters, but not for spices; I use them on my kitchen table for sugar and sugar substitute (for hubby); they match my stainless salt and pepper shakers.

I like the Spice Islands bottles for spices (they're very decorative), so when I run out of a particular spice, I buy the cheaper brands to refill the Spice Island bottles. See how I am?

So you don't buy the spices from Bakers Cataolgue? Where do you find the spice island spices?

Spice Islands is available at any grocery store. They're expensive, so, as I said, I initially buy the pretty bottles of the stuff, then when I run out I buy the cheaper version to re-fill the empty Spice Islands bottles. I think some of my bottles are 30 years old!

Hey, Girlfriend -- I keep forgetting to mention the bread bases. See page 34, middle of page, "Create special flavored breads easily." When you get your new bread machine, you'll have to try these bases, which you add to your basic bread recipe. They turn a plain recipe into something fantastic. I bought the sample pack and tried them all -- well worth the money. My fave is the Apple & Spice. YUM!
