Hey All! I'm kinda new around here. Well I have been coming to the site since I first got sick, about a year and a half ago. The difference is this time I am coming with a committement to getting better and taking charge of my symptoms. I am 19 and a freshman in college in AZ and I am quickly realizing that if I do not take control it will take more control of me than it already has. Basically any help that anyone can share would be awesome. I was wondering what suggestions people have as far as really sticking to the IBS diet while in college. I don't have my own transportation and therefore limited access to a grocery store. How does everyone else do it? I am not one to give up on things I start, especially school but it is becoming increasingly harder.
Thanks!

Always, Renee

Hi Renee!

There are a few that are/were in college and will hopefully be around to post some good advice for you.

Welcome to the boards!

Hi Renee,
I didn't have IBS as an undergrad, but I do now and I'm a grad student, so I know how it is! You need to watch out for stress and fatigue (I'm really bad about that...).

As for cooking, do you have an occaisonal ride to the store or are you on a meal plan? You could stock up on supplies, especially things like tea, pasta, rice, crackers, cereal and other safe foods that last a long time. You could also freeze loaves of bread, this goes for Heather's homemade breads too. I like to take a Sunday and make a couple loaves of zucchinni bread and freeze 'em. As for veggies and fruit, I suppose you could try frozen ones. I'd guess they are better than canned. Also buy the soy milk that's not refridgerated. I don't have a lot of time to cook during the week, so I'm a big fan of super-easy things, like pasta, stir-fry and the like. Once you get used to the diet, it becomes second nature, but I know it's tough at first, so if you got more questions, post 'em! Good Luck!
Julie
