Hi everyone,

I've been away in Tasmania bushwalking for 3 weeks (you've all been busy, its taken me days to catch up with your posts!!) but I now need some advice.

The first night of my bushwalking trip (5 days out)I discovered that my little camp stove was not working...it was very disappointing but not a total disaster. My friend and I cut our walk from 7 to 5 days and rationed our food. So for the 5 days I was eating a cup of cold oatmeal for breakfast, museli bars and dried banana and mango for moring and afternoon tea and corn thins with salmon and hummos or peanut butter and jam for lunch and dinner. I was also taking a multivitamin and magnesium tablets (muscle ease). At the most I ate 4 corn thins in 1 sitting. So basically it was very little food. We were also walking with full packs -all that rice we couldn't eat - for 15 to 20 km a day.

At the end of the walk I felt absolutely amazing. Stomach was completely bloat free, I had more energy and was alot happier (also being off work for a while makes me feel good and generally less stressed).

But since then things have gone back down hill. I know the diet I ate is not possible to maintain...for one thing when we got back to a town and some food we found ourselves starving and needed to eat every hour...so I'm back to eating large meals which I think is one of my biggest IBS triggers. Also trying to find IBS safe and wheat free food while traveling proved impossible, so I broke out in that way too.

Can anyone offer any advice to help me....it's good that I now know what to do to feel good, but it just feels too impossible to do at home (familiar environment and old habits)...also I don't have the time to walk 15km a day!!

Thanks for getting through all this....I'm just feeling really frustrated because I had a glimpse of "life before IBS" and I lost it, which makes me depressed which makes me eat (and round and round it goes).

Any words of wisdom would be wonderful....

Emma

Sounds like a great holiday! I'm sure the walking helped a lot, I know exercise is really good for your digestion. Maybe you could try at least to keep up some of it - work breaks, weekends?
I know it's hard to change eating habits unless you HAVE to, believe me, my willpower is non-existant! But if you can keep in your mind the exhilaration of how you felt being so well and relaxed, it'll help motivate you.
Good luck!

Hi,

Your story sounds familiar and I have asked myself the same question many times. I don't know if I'm right or not, it's just a hunch but I think you probably felt good because you were so relaxed and doing something you loved. I believe a relaxed, stress free mind has a lot of power over calming those intestines. I think that probably had a more powerful effect than what you ate. (though I'm not denying smaller meals do help!)

Since I have come to this conclusion I have decided to try the IBS Audio Program. I don't know whether you have considered it or not, there is lots of good info on it on the MB now.

Good luck,
Kerrie

I have to agree - I think it's that you were relaxed and stress free - away from the daily routines and little stresses of life. I find that when I'm on school holidays (I"m a teacher), my ibs isn't nearly as bad. I put it down to being much more relaxed.

Hey there,

thanks for your replys! It's so nice just to know that your all out there and willing to listen. So, thanks again.

I think your right on the stress free front....I got home to major stress issues...problems with student visa's and doctors visits etc for hormone problems (do you sometimes feel that when one part of your body decides to go into hiatus, the rest follows...)

But after a total stress blow out I'm trying to remain calm and relaxed, and only worry about things I actually NEED to worry about...easier said than done, but I'm going ok.

And maybe I should start running again....it has been a while.

Thanks for listening and your supportive responses.

Emma
