Acacia and Gas

Hi!

I started taking Acacia today. I took one teaspoon before lunch and another teaspoon before dinner. I took in both times with a lot of water. I have more gas than usual and I was wondering if that had anything to do with the Acacia.
Anyone?

Were you taking a fiber supplement before the acacia? Or is the acacia the first? Your body just needs to adjust to it. It took me awhile also; I had been taking only one capsule of Citrucel twice a day, which is virtually nothing, so when I switched to the acacia, it took me awhile (especially when I began increasing it too quickly). Just give yourself some time to get adjusted. You'll be just fine. The acacia is great stuff.

I've had a similar problem with acacia, and it's driving me crazy! Bev, I'm curious, how long did it take for your body to get used to the acacia? Because I switched over from Fiber Choice over 2 weeks ago, and I've been having strange gassy feelings and sudden urgent needs to urinate ever since. I started out at the same dose I was taking with the other fiber and increased it by 1 tsp about a week ago, so I was up to 4 tsp. Then it gave me even more trouble so I dropped back down to the 3 tsp, but I still feel weird. Today I just gave up and switched back to my Fiber Choice for a while to see if the strangeness goes away, because it didn't seem to be getting any better! Any suggestions from those of who who successfully switched to acacia would be appreciated. I'm wondering if my body just doesn't tolerate it well.

Acacia should not cause gas. What did you eat for lunch and supper? Remember to eat slowly, chew thoroughly. Also, were there any gas producers in your meals? Veggies? Hidden dairy?

No, there wasn't anything in my meal. That's what's so frustrating.

Kree - Don't feel bad. Acacia didn't even work for me so I had to go back to Citrucel. Is the amount you were taking equal in grams to the amount of Fiber Choice you were taking?

Chantale - Were you taking a supplement before? Maybe you can drop to 1/2 tsp for each dose for a few days and see what happens?

Thanks Mags. What a bummer, everyone raves about the acacia so I was very hopeful about it. I was taking the same dose as the fiber choice and then increased it by 1 tsp, but even after I dropped back down it irritated me. I think I'll give it one more try and then try citrucel or benefiber. Thanks for your input! I'm curious, what did the acacia do to you?

Chantale, sorry to highjack your thread, lol. Have you continued with the acacia? How are things going?

Well, it didn't make me feel worse. It just didn't make me feel as well as the Citrucel Clear Mix does. I feel better on acacia than on nothing, but not as good as I feel as when taking Citrucel. I had the same thing happen to me with Benefiber. Does that make sense? LOL

Hi!

Thanks for your help. I think it could have been the enzymes I took at dinner... Anyways, it seems to be better today. Maybe it's just because I'm in a "C" period now, also.

I can't find neither Citrucel not Benefiber here in Canada. Hansolo and Belinda (or anyone else!?) do you know if they are sold here?

Gerry, I'm glad the acacia is working okay for you! So how much did you increase it at a time to get up to 2 Tbsp?

I'm doing very well, thank you Gerry. As a matter of fact, I just ran out of the acacia, and have asked Heather to send me more. It's great stuff; I've increased my dosage considerably (over a long period of time), and I'm sure it's helping -- along with my probiotics.

How you doin'?

Kree, I just now saw your post. I didn't know it was directed to me. I don't read all the posts; if I've answered a particular thread, I don't usually read others' answers -- unless I see a heading that has my name on it.

Any-who.... the acacia was a little difficult for me to increase. I had bloating and gas something terrible when I accidentally measured it wrong and was increasing it without intending to. (You know, you have to use a measuring teaspoon, not a serving teaspoon.) When I dropped back to the correct measurement, I was fine. I have since increased the dosage, but VERRRRRY slowly, and am doing just great. Actually, I've run out of the stuff and have ordered more from Heather.

Having said that, I don't think acacia is for everyone. Mags had a problem with it, so she switched back a little to her Citrucel once a day and the acacia once a day. That seems to have worked for her. You might give that a try. Why not direct a post in this thread "To Mags" -- maybe she might have more insight for you.

I also had an increase in gas with acacia for the first week and half to two weeks. I reduced my dose a little and have gradually built my dose up. If your still having a lot of gas, try to reduce your amount a little for a few days to see if that helps. As your body adjust to the extra fiber the extra gas should go away!

Hi Chantale!

Nice to see you on this message board! I'm afraid I can't be of help re: availability of Citrucel or Benefiber here in Canada. In fact, you are way ahead of me in trying Acacia. I'm waiting to hear how you are doing on it and, depending on the report, I may try it too.

In the meantime, I'm still too chicken to try a fiber supplement. Can't you see my feathers?!!!

Me too...I have had really bad gas pains and bloating, I really think its the acacia Darn it! I think I'm going to do citrucel and a small amount of acacia. Maybe I'll get used to it that way. I've been in a world of pain the past few days...I had also been uping the dose of acacia. So I think that's been my problem!

I have been eating really well too. So I'm at a loss. I guess stoping acacia for a few days will be the test!!!

That sounds like a smart idea Steph. I'm feeling a little better since I stopped the acacia, although it's taking a while for my system to get back to normal! I agree, it is too bad that it doesn't seem to work well for us. That's a good idea about trying some of each supplement though... maybe I'll get brave and try adding it back that way too.

Hi Melluv,
Are you taking Acacia? Or is this just because of you IBS? Mine is both ofcourse...but I think it is worse because of the Acacia. Now it works REALLY well for some here on the boards and there is a few of us that are having a really hard time with it. I think I'm not going to take it anymore. I've been bloated, gas and gas pains...side and back pain. I've been feeling horriable the past week! I try to manage it with tea. But to be honest it has not helped one bit! Normaly it helps tons. Peppermint and fennel are the two I drink. I'm getting ready to take a hot bath and maybe some tea before bed! I hope tomorrow is better. I took my last dose of acacia last night before bed. I havent' had anymore today. So maybe tomorrow will be better!! OH PLEASE!!!! I really hope My tummy too looks like a baloon...if only we could pop it!!!

Well I hope I help and answered some of you questions! Let me know if I can help!

Take care!

Going through the same thing. Almost like a gall bladder attack but I don't have it.

Trying herbal teas, fennel, pepppermit and chamoile. They help a bit but not much. But at lease constipation has eased up for now.

Hi Gerry! You're early tonight, it's not midnight yet, lol... at least not here in NY! I'm glad the acacia helped with your D! That must be a great relief. I'm a C girl myself, so I didn't have that to worry about. My main problem has always been gas and bloating, and the acacia did seem to make it even worse. In other words, I don't have much advice to offer you in that area! I'm assuming you've tried fennel tea? I can't stand the stuff but everyone says it's great for bloating. I do buy celestial seasonings Tummy Mint, which contains some fennel, and that does seem to help a little bit. Anyway, to make a long story short, I hope you get the bloating under control! Let's hope we all do.
