Hi everyone, I get D frequently, and I take immodium at least 3 times a week. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried lomotil. Does anyone have any opinions on the drug? Do any of you guys think that will block me up bad? I just want to free to eat whatever I want without regretting it.

Hi

I have been taking Lomotil for some years. I just did a post on that subject this week. Lomotil is okay but it can be addictive and when starting it if of course you take too much it will block you. I had dysentery from a trip to Mexico and took for some time. I wasn't aware until I was eventually hospitalized that I had a mild dose of typhoid.

I kept on the Lomotil at about one a day and I'm afraid it is habit forming. I know Immodium is good and unlike Lomotil it is not a narcotic. If you would like a medical opinion go to http://AllExperts.com. It is a site manned by volunteers and there is no registration or cost. Under Health & Fitness you will see a breakdown of conditions. I would say for you to go to Women's Health and ask a physician.

You fill out a question form on the screen and submit to the network which sends on to the volunteer. Your reply from volunteers comes back the same way and often the same day. Be sure to complete your e-mail address.

My suggestion anyway for what it is worth.

My doctor prescribed it for me when he first suspected I had IBS, some 8 or 9 years ago. I took it only when I had attacks. I'm a "D". It works for the "D" but not for the severe cramps. So when I got a confirmed diagnosis of IBS, my doc then prescribed Donnatal, which works for both (but is supposedly addictive, although I haven't found that to be so in my case).

I still take the Lomotil when I have severe diarrhea without cramps. It's good stuff. It has never kept me from being able to poop, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Your last comment concerns me. "I just want to free to eat whatever I want without regretting it." We can't eat whatever we want with IBS. Perhaps I misunderstood you?

They need volunteer experts in the field of IBS at the web site you mentioned. Here is the link if someone is interested. new

They have no volunteers yet at the IBS portion of the web site. To bad. Some people from here would sure be the ones to answer general questions and get "our" way of eating info out there.
Volunteer to be an IBS expert

Agree it would be nice but under Women's Health there are physicians there who can answer the type of quetion she is asking. There also phamacists there also.

When I was being treated for a possible back order due to a fracture of a vertebrae it was a doctor there who after reading my sumptoms advised me that I could have a gall bladder problem and ask for an ultrasound. It turned out he was correct and since then I have used the site.

I must be missing something ArtKen. I was looking for advise (more like education) on a particular medication and never got to it. It had nothing to do with women's problems so didn't go into that section...I'll just have to go back...
So YOU were in the women's section, were you? Interesting.

Welcome to the no-gall bladder club. I had mine out 10 years ago. Wish I hadn't had to but did.....had only one stone.... the size of a golf ball...the attacks were not nice.

Well I quoted Women's Section as I knew it had a similar section as men's Questions Re Family and Internal Medicine.

I know what you mean about no gall bladder. I still get what appear to be attacks such as last couple of days. Although I can tolerate more food now still some bother me.

As for the site there are many subjects and I hope you eventually find what you are looking for. When it was recommended to me I had a time trying to figure out where to go. But it has been worth it. I've used it for prescription advice and for computer problems as well as from hospice care volunteer when my mother was terminaly ill last year.

You're right, I'm amazed at the professionals that volunteer at that site. new

I went roaming yesterday in a number of fields at the allexperts site. Nice to have a variety of individuals to choose from. I liked the fact they gave their bio w/experience and then had a rating system of them, for us who ask the questions.

I'm sure I'll get lots of use out of the site.

Thanks for sharing with us.

P.S. I can relate also to having had a mother in hospice. I lost mine 2 years ago after being in a nursing home for many years due to a stroke. It was ulimately bone cancer that got her at age 85. It's still never easy to see them go, and I do so miss her to this day.

Hi Lyn,
I do take this medicine for "D". I helps me and I have no problems with taking it when needed. As for eating whatever you want thats a different story. Good luck because I have to watch what I eat all the time.

hi ArtKen,
I had my gallbladder out last year, still have pain. I have all the signs of a gallbladder attacks but its gone. Mine was crystalized (no stones) so it didn't should up on the tests. Its called a strawberry gallbladder which is 5% of the people and pain still after is in 3% (thats what my doctor told me). If you know of any way to stop the pain PLease let me know. Because thats why I'm being treated for IBS (along with D and C problems, which I didn't have b4 having my gallbladder out).
Like to hear from you--
kathyjo

Well kathyjo I had problems for about the first 6 months then it seemed to ease off. I remember finally being able to take a cheeseburger with fries after getting brave.

To be honest I am trying to determine if this is relating to recent constipation attacks as normally my problem at times is the other way. Metamucil normally helps and is supposed to work for either condition.

I am seeing physician tomorrow so see what he says. I am wondering if the removal of gallbladder has increased the problem of a hiatus hernia,

But I will get back to your post after hearing what he has to say. My gall bladder was full of both the crystalized as well as normal stones. But if it is any help I have been told by a liver specialist on the AllExperts network I referred to in the subject that the lver will eventually adjust and beginning storing bile in the area of the bile duct where it is clipped off when removing gall bladder. However unlike a normal gall bladder it cannot aid in ordering more bile when needed in a fatty meal such as the gall blader could.

Have I got you confused enough with this long post?

But I will advise further tomorrow.
