Hello everyone, I have been having a lot of trouble finding things to eat here at school and i was aondering if i should see a nutritionist. My diet consists of poptarts, bagels, blueberry muffins, and plain pasta, and occasionaly i can make myself eat a protein bar. I know, I am getting no veggies, or fruit, and probably little protein. But we have so much mexican food and burgers here at school. On top of that, I am running 7-12 miles a day, and I feel like i am not giving my body the right amount of fuel. Its just that my body cannot tolerate anything insoluble at all. I try eating it with solubles, but it doesnt help. Do you think it would be beneficial to see a nutritionist, or would they no little about Ibs and the right foods to eat. I was also wondering if anyone with IBS is on the pill. Wouldnt that make IBS far worse?? Thanks for any advice.

I can't help you with your nutritionist question but I have IBS-C and am on the pill. I have been on the pill for almost 3 years and developed IBS after, so i'm not sure of the effects. Your diet sounds a lot like mine, although I can tolerate peanut butter so I go crazy on my PB&J sandwiches!

I'm IBS-C with occasional D, and I think the Pill helped me. First off, I feel a lot less sick because I have fewer cramps. It also made me less C, although that's a mild effect compared to getting enough veggies and fruit and fiber (of both sorts). I won't even get into the lowering of stress that comes from eliminating pregnancy scares!

Have you tried well-cooked veggies and fruit? Start with applesauce, and work your way to stuff like minestrone. Take a look at the recipes in Heather's books and on this site, and try to get some sort of good stuff in your body that doesn't make you feel bad!

I'm a fruit/veggie avoider myself, but I do feel much better when I get at least one or two servings per meal. I also feel better when I don't eat salads or raw carrots or huge commercial smoothies (oooh, the fructose and the ice!) or the other stuff I flogged myself to eat before reading Heather's books. Some nice cooked stuff is going to be far nicer to your belly than protein bars with all their artificial ingredients.....

You're away at school, right? That means you don't have access to a kitchen and can't cook, correct? Do you at least have a little fridge? Microwave? Anything?

What about those little cans of V8 juice? I think you have to refrigerate them, though, but I'm not sure. The ingredients are: tomato juice from concentrate, reconstituted vegetable juice blend (water and concentrated juices of carrots, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress, spinach), potassium chloride, sugar, ascorbic acid, magnesium, salt, citric acid, spice extract, flavoring, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate. Yum.

The subject of V8 juice has come up before on the Board, but I haven't yet found a definitive yay or nay. You might give it a try; at least you'd get your veggies, right? Lets see, zero fat, zero cholesterol, 50 calories per 8 ounces, 900mg. potassium, 1g. protein, and a whopping 140mg. sodium (obviously no good for me -- and this is the "75% less sodium" variety!) Anyway, there's your veggies.

Also, what about keeping a small stash of bananas in your room? There's your fruit.

We did a long thread about granola bars -- do a search. I can tolerate the Nature Valley quite well, and the peanut butter are to die for. I keep a few in my purse for emergencies.

Last, but certainly not least, the tuna pouches are unbelievably delicious. No cans, no juice, just very fresh-tasting albacore, and one pouch is one big serving, so there's no waste, nothing to refrigerate. And there's your protein.

Hope some of this helps. As far as the pill goes, I SOOOO can't help you with that! With regard to a nutritionist, I saw one once, and yes she was very helpful -- but my visits centered around being able to cook. Do you feel you need a nutritionist? You have Heather's "The First Year," don't you? If you follow her advice, and work around the restrictions you have as regards cooking at school, you should be fine.

Good luck!

Hi!

I've seen three different nutritionnists since last summer. (I didn't know Heather's web site back then)
The first nutritionnist I went to was supposed to be very good with IBS questions (according to her ad in the yellow pages). She turned out to be sort of a freak cause she told me I should stop eating things that I realized after I could eat, they were just not "healthy enough" for her!!! For exemple, she said I shouldn't eat Rice Krispies cause it was almost only air in them.... I don't care!!! All I want to know is if it's gonna make me sick!!

The second one I went to was really good. She was hired by the IBS Association of Québec. She gave me really good advice and recommended another nutritionnist who lived closest to where I live. This third one is fantastic! She made me try different foods that were supposedly "illegal" and it turned out going quite well.

My advice to you would be to see a nutritionnist but to choose her very carefully. Maybe there's a support group in your area where they can recommand one to you.

Meanwhile, I know what you're going through cause I always feel that way when I'm away from home.

You can try: bananas, baby food (fruits), soy puddings, applesauce, rice crackers, carrot juice (if you like it, I personnaly don't - but that's just me...), rice and salmon, sandwiches (you can probably tolerate one slice of tomatoes in them), etc.

Nutritionnists are usually very good to solve this type of problem,
I wish you good luck!

This will be totally not helpful, but after reading this thread, I couldn't help but remember my experience in college the one year I lived in a dorm. The only things I could find that didn't make me sick were:
mashed potatoes from the cafeteria
dannon yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, french fries and coca cola from the snack bar.
Instant oatmeal, instant soup and instant cocoa that I made in my room with a little electric pot to heat water.
I'm amazed I lived!
