If Catnip is mint, does that mean that a person with GERD shouldn't use it? Or, could they use it successfully in capsule form? In Heather's First Year book, page 170, she states it relieves gas, heartburn and colic. This makes me wonder if it isn't a different more tolerable form of mint for the GERD folks.
Besides relieving upset stomachs it is a good sleep aid.
Has anyone here tried it?

I know you are asking a serious question, but when I read your post, all I could think about was my 4 fur-babies and how they LOVE the stuff. When we give it to them, we have to give a separate pile to each cat, because they don't want to share it. Then, we just sit back and watch the show! They lick it, sniff it, roll around in it, and get really frisky, then crash and nap for hours. Can you tell, I'm easy to entertain? I'm sure someone will give you a REAL answer, but maybe I contributed a laugh? Have a good evening.

People can actually eat catnip? That's news to me too! I'll be interested to see what answers you get.

Yeah, me too, Kree -- I was skipping over this thread because I thought it had to do with cat food.

It is really interesting that you mention catnip. Until recently, I hadn't known that people could eat it either. I just bought a new tea (Tension Tamer from Celestial Seasonings), and one of the ingredients is Catnip. It's a kind of strong tea, and has many other ingredients, but doesn't seem to bother my stomach and such much, and usually seems to settle it quite a bit. I'm not sure how it affects GERD. It is great for relieving anxiety and does help with sleep quite a lot.

I too have had catnip in some herbal teas but can't remember which ones. Like Valerian is promotes sleep.
I'm hoping Heather can shed some light on this since peppermint should be avoided by folks with GERD, but according to her book Catnip can actually be of some help in that area. This sure has me scratching my head!

Ms. Doe,
Cute, and yes your story made me smile.
I've had kitties all my life, some LOVE catnip and do the same as your babies, others give me that look as if to say, "You want me to do what with this stuff? Tuff!" The fact that they crash and sleep after the initial "crazy hour" shows that it has a sedative quality for both cat and man. Another herb they react to is Valerian. Every try it? They are facinated with the stuff, but oh my, it really stinks! I can hardly stand the smell of the capsules alone, but it sure works as a sleep aid.
Now, where's Heather on this?
