Hi everyone. Heres a bunch of questions if anyone can answer them. Which of Heathers books should I read first? Is it wise to take vitamine supplements like centrum? Crush fennel seeds or do not? Should I put fennel seeds into a pot of boiling water or instead pour boiling it didn't yet dissolve fully. Is pasta made with eggs and is it safe to eat? Italian bread just as safe as french or sourdough? How do you place a picture in your profile? Should I put lettuce into a sandwich or I should eat the sandwhich than eat the lettuce? Can taking to much fiber supplements at once cause more bloating and discomfort? Is there any mayo thats safe to use because I love potato salad. Thankyou to the people who have spent time on this post If any1 want to chat, my screename is spyhawk19 at aol because I love talking to people.

Hi and welcome!

I'll answer some of your questions..

Which of Heathers books should I read first?
I think you should begin with The first year, I learned a lot from it! You konw that you can read some chapters right here on the site, just click on the link IBS books on your left and find the link chapters in the info on each book.

Is pasta made with eggs and is it safe to eat?
I eat tagiatelle and feel ok, but not everebody does. I actually can eat egg yolks - I even eat a fried egg sadwich sometimes(no butter on the bread and a cup of camomile tea on the side)

Italian bread just as safe as french or sourdough? All white bread is ok, I think.

Should I put lettuce into a sandwich or I should eat the sandwhich than eat the lettuce? I always put the lettuce on the sandwich.

Can taking to much fiber supplements at once cause more bloating and discomfort? I get IBS-C if I take to much.

Is there any mayo thats safe to use because I love potato salad? I can eat small amounts of light mayo, you could serve the salad dressing on the side instead of drenching the potatoes in it. Use it as a dip and make it whith a lot of herbes or some mustard - if it tastes a lot you don't have to use to much. Add soy yoghurt instead of sour cream.

Good Luck!

Sofia

Hi Alan,

Since Fia answered most of your questions, I'll tackle the fennel issue for you. You don't have to crush the fennel; you brew it like tea, using a tea strainer. It won't dissolve, you remove it after the tea has steeped. I save it for later and use it for my second cup. Personally, I hate the taste, and I love Heather's peppermint, so I combine the two; the peppermint overpowers the taste of the fennel and makes a rather nice cuppa!

The only other question Fia didn't answer was posting your picture. A lot of us ask Heather to do it for us -- like me -- but you need to e-mail her personally to do that: heatherandcompany@yahoo.com.

Welcome to the Boards, Spyhawk19 !

Hi Alan! Welcome to the boards! Just a few more comments for you here.

Italian bread is fine, as long as it's dairy-free! I've found that some breads sneak milk in there, so you'll want to check the ingredients! I don't know if there's ever milk in Italian bread or not. Anyone else know?

I'm also fine with a little lettuce on a sandwich, but be careful because raw veggies are the worst trigger and I think some people have trouble with even a little bit of lettuce.

Fiber supplements can cause bloating and gas if you start upping your dose too quickly. If you ease into it you shouldn't have any problem, though, as long as you're not taking psyllium or inulin, both of which can cause lots of gas in IBS sufferers. Heather describes more about fiber supplements and how much to take here: web page

I'm also fine with light mayo, and I'm pretty sure most of us are. As in most cases, just use it with caution first and see how it works for you! I know it's overwhelming at first, but once you get things figured out you'll feel so much better. Good luck!

Welcome A multivitamin should be ok, although keep in mind (in large amounts) that iron can cause constipation, vitamin c can cause D, magnesium can cause D, and calcium can cause constipation. But all together they kinda cancel each other out. I don't have a problem with Centrum. Pasta usually isn't made out of eggs, you can look at the ingrediants to check. I don't have problem with lettuce in a sandwich, but everyone's different, see how you react to it. Too much fiber at once can definatly hurt you, also keep in mind that people react differently to the different brands of fiber. Personally, I tried Citrocel and it gave me more IBS symptoms, now I'm on Benefiber and I'm fine. As far as mayo, I use Nayonaise(there's also Veganaise) which is made out of soy, it's lower fat then regular, but tastes much better then the regular low fat kinds(I think it tastes like regular!)

Italian Bread is made without milk or egg yolks and has been perfectly safe for me. I do make sure that it is baked fresh the day I buy it. Those preservatives in other breads like Rainbow and Wonder, do me in. I always have a little lettuce on my sandwich and so far have had no problems. As far as multivitamins, I am afraid that I have not found one yet that does not bother me. Maybe some of the others will have some good advice on that. I have been able to eat any kind of pasta that I wish. I am a little careful about egg noodles though. I hope this helps, welcome to the boards!
