Hi I'm new to the boards. In November I purchased Eating for IBS and I have tried to eliminate all trigger foods and added soluable fiber to my diet. That seemed to really help. But now I'm experiencing weight gain. I have always struggled with my weight. I lost about 60lbs. when I was 20. I kept it off for 10 years. then I got pregnant, gained 40lbs. and now my little one is almost 3 and I can't get the weight off. Before I became pregnant i had Ibs symptoms but they weren't as bad during my pregnancy. They returned 6 months after my baby was born. My doctor told me to have a colonoscopy done. I had one and they found a large polyp. After having that removed my symptoms disappeared. So at the beginning of 2003 I tried the Atkins diet and lost about 15lbs. But around september 2003 my IBS returned. So now I'm watching the pounds return.
I really want to lose the weight, but all good eating plans to lose weight include salads(I don't tolerate at all anymore),raw veggies and little or no soluable fiber. Everything is High fiber.Which I have a hard time tolerating.
Does anyone have any ideas for me?
One more question? Does anyone pay the day after a trigger food is eaten? I usually pay the day after a trigger food is eaten instead of the same day. Does that sound normal?

Thanks in advance
Marci

Welcome aboard!!

Taking your last point first, yes, I sometimes don't pay until the next day. Sometimes it's kind of a cumulative effect, eating something borderline too many days in a row and then BAM! Run for the bathroom!

As far as weight gain/loss, I've been following Heather's IBS diet pretty faithfully for about two years now, during which time I've lost 13 pounds, which for me is a lot - almost 10% of my starting weight of 140. But I also had to count calories every day! There are no shortcuts -- exercise more, eat less is the only 100% reliable weight loss program!

Good luck and welcome.

Marci, I don't know how old you are, but from what I gather from your post, you're not a youngster. You must know by now that as we age our metabolism slows down and bingo bango, weight gain! Not a pretty picture.

It's not the IBS that's to blame for the weight gain. A lot of people here actually lose weight on the program. (Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.) While I haven't lost any weight, neither have I gained.

It's not very encouraging, I know, but my doctor told me, "calories in, calories out." He doesn't abide by any particular diet and says I could gain weight on celery. (I responded, "not me! I can't eat the stuff!" He was not amused.) His point was to simply cut WAY down on portions and increase WAY up on exercise. Don'tcha hate hearing that all the time?

As for your last question, the answer is yes. The only way I can keep track of what could have caused my attack is by maintaining my food diary and being honest with myself when making entries in it. Then, when an attack hits, I refer back to that diary, and guess what -- I can always find the culprit.

Any-who.... welcome to the boards, Marci! I'll see ya around.

Bev.

Welcome to teh boards, Marci! Your question is an age old question here. It is possible to lose weight on this diet and the reason is simple. First, it's based on the FDA recommendations for the food groups. Second, the foods that are really high in calories - the ones that really cause us to gain weight are eliminated - like beef, dairy, fats, etc. You may find that you can tolerate small salads. Try one after eating a bowl of white rice or a large slice of french bread. Make sure you chew thoroughly and watch the salad dressing. Make sure it's low or non-fat and dairy free. As for veggies, and fruits which are high in soluble fiber, you really should try to incorporate as many as you can into your diet. The trick here with the IBS is to mash, cook, and puree like crazy. This makes them much more tolerable to eat. A strawberry smoothie is a perfect example. I can't eat a bowl of strawberries. But if I throw them nto the blender and add some ice and soy milk, presto! I can tolerate them and it even tastes yummy.
