Being new to this and self diagnosed because I have no insurance right now (I am getting insurance as soon as tax return comes in) I am scared to death. This is only the second time this has happened to me this bad. My gut area from my belly button region down has been in constant pain since yesterday about two hours after I ate. It was so bad last night that I was ready to go to the emergency room. Today it is slightly better. I am not in tears like last night but still VERY tender! Has anyone else had IBS attacks like this? Is this what they are? I am so scared. Please understand it is not that I don't want to go to the doctor, but if I go and it is my IBS (like I think it is) then I will have a preexisting condition and nothing will be covered. So I don't know what to do. Last time this happened it took about three days and the tenderness went away. That was about four months ago but it was never so bad that I was crying like last night. ANy advice would help. Thanks so much!
Carrie

Carrie, I take it you have not had a colonoscopy? So you don't have a definite diagnosis of IBS then?

Are you so doubled over in pain that you have to hang onto the furniture to keep from falling over? And the cramps are all the way "down there"? When you go to the toilet, are they just little poops accompanied by a little pee that gives a little tiny relief, but only temporarily?

I don't mean to worry you more, but I would go to the doctor immediately. The hell with the insurance. Your health is TOO IMPORTANT to fool around with. If those are your symptoms, it could be diverticulitis. That's what happened to me. Finally, I was so sick, I had to have my hubby take me to the hospital. They gave me a catscan that showed I had diverticulitis. It came as a total surprise; I had no idea that I had diverticuli at all -- and it had become infected (thus, diverticulitis). It's treated with a course of antibiotics until the infection is gone. But you need to see a doctor to first get a diagnosis and second get the antibiotics.

I agree with Bev. It could even be something like appendicitis, which if it bursts you could DIE!! Please go to the hospital ASAP. We'd never forgive ourselves if you are really sick.

Hi Carrie,
That is my situation. I was diagnosed 2 days ago but I've been without insurance. Mine kicks in on February 1. I was treating myself and doing research on the web to find out what was wrong. The pain was near my navel and it resembled appendicitis but I ruled it out on my own because I didnt have a fever. I began to log when it would occur and always it was right after a meal and could last for 6 hours or more. I was out of work for 2 weeks just trying to hang in there because of no insurance.
Finally, I came to my senses, and went to see the doctor. I had an ultrasound to rule out appendicitis, diverticulitis and anything else. I also had blood work. All the symptoms plus my history of fibromyalgia showed IBS. I paid for it on my Credit card. Yes, I will have a pre-existing,and a bill, but my peace of mind is worth it. Please see a doctor. Let us know how you are.
