Hi Everyone. My doc just started giving me Lexapro for my IBS? Does anyone else use it? And if you did do you know if it interferes with Birth Control? Thanks!

Hi Bek
My doc put me on Lexapro last yr. I wanted to try a different kind of anti-depressant. It wasn't effective for me for depression. It might work great for IBS,don't know. Sorry Hope you get an answer.I will look in my PDR and see if it says anything helpful.

I'm sorry; I never heard of it. Is it an antidepressant? I took Wellbutrin, but it caused terrible cramping. Did you ask your doctor these questions? If not, you should.

Well it's not in my PDR.I think it is a bit newer than my book would cover. So I went to Lexapro.com.Here is what it says about w/other meds.
Can I take LEXAPRO with other medications?
LEXAPRO can be taken with most other medications except another family of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). LEXAPRO and MAOIs should not be taken together or within 14 days of each other. As with other SSRIs, caution is indicated in taking LEXAPRO with tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Before you begin taking LEXAPRO, make sure to tell your healthcare professional or doctor if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, diet supplements, etc.

Bek, I am on Effexor, which is similar to Lexapro, and my doctor said it don't interfere with birth control. But if you want to be absolutely sure, it is better to hear it come out of the mouth of a doctor, rather than ending up unexpectedly pregnant

I take Lexapro for depression and to my knowledge it does not interfere in any way with birth control pills. I actually didn't even know Lexapro was prescribed for IBS. Unfortunately, it has not seemed to help the IBS situation at all so far (I've been taking it for a few months after taking various other antidepressants for the past 10 years). Good luck - I hope it helps you!!

I have been on Lexapro since last spring. I have been on birth control for many years, no problems taking them together!

I have been on Wellbutrin and zoloft in the past and like the lexapro the best! Not sure its really helped my IBS but it has helped my general overall feeling a lot! I still have a few bad days, mostly PMS related! Boy, those nasty hormones can make me CRAZY and TENSE! But otherwise, I really like the Lexapro. It took my system a couple weeks to adjust, I was jittery and spacey the first couple weeks but that went away!

Taking it one day at a time.....

I have also taken a variety of anti-depressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Celexa and one or 2 others I that I can't recall at the moment) and the Lexapro seems to be working well so far. The Wellbutrin was the worst for me - it made me feel like my brains were jiggling around in my head! I don't know what the medical term is for that but it certainly was unpleasant. And I even tried it on 2 separate occasions. I hope the Lexapro works for you as well!
