So I had my Gi Dr appt today. To start he had a bad cold so didn't feel good. He told me he doesn't really believe in IBS and said my symptoms don't sound like IBS at all. So he wants to test for lactose and fructose intolerance, and check my thyroid and some other hormone. I don't see how it could be lactose or fructose since I'm not eating those things now. Then, in the middle of the exam he was called out and took so long that I had to leave to pick up my kids. So I don't know what his final recommendation is or what I am to do next! To top things off I made the famous pasta and shrimp recipe and managed to even screw that up so that it looks like tapioca! AARGGG!

Joan, I don't mean to laugh, but I can't help it. I've had these kinds of days, and they're nothing to laugh at, so I apologize -- but it was the pasta and shrimp that put me over the edge.

Doctors! He didn't have time for you -- yet you can be sure he'll have time to send you his whopping bill! I wonder if he'll deduct for the time he DIDN'T spend with you on that scheduled appointment! GRRR. Don't get me started.

Were you referred to this GI by your primary care giver? I'd ask for another referral. You haven't had a colonoscopy, then? So it's possible you DON'T have IBS. Okay, okay, so there's a good thing. This could turn out in your favor, Girl!

Let us know what you decide to do.

Oh Bev, that was just a few of the highlights to my peachy day. I had a full work up 5 years ago when I got the diagnosis. Another GI Dr covered all the bases from colonoscopy, to endoscopy, the Barium swallow and enema, gallbladder work up, etc. This GI Dr believes symptoms are caused by food allergies, but doesn't see my symptoms fitting into either category. I'm an enigma once again. He also doesn't think I have canker sores in my mouth. He said something about a yeast infection before he went sneezing and coughing out of the room. I'm so glad he shook my hand.
Now I sit with my son who is covered in peanut butter and wiping his face on my clothes while he sticks his hand down my shirt. What more could I ask for?

Canker sores in your mouth? I thought that was a symptom of crohn's or colitis - I can't remember which. I would visit the c and c board and see. As for the Doctor - ditch him. He sounds really quite useless - literally. If he doesn't believe in it, how can he possibly help you????
As for the son and the PB - I can totally relate - mine's 2 and 4 months. How old's yours?

Oh Joan, sorry to hear about your yucky day! I hope after you wipe the PB off your son's face you can get to bed, because hopefully tomorrow will be better! As for your GI doc, I agree, kick his butt to the curb! Well, not literally, lol. But he certainly doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about. If you're not eating things and still having problems, how can your problems be an intolerance to those things?? Oy. Go see another doc!

HI... just curious.. has Celiac been ruled out in your case? - Do you know anything about Celiac? it is intolerance to gluten... which is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye... and lots of processed foods... "modified food starch" ... it can mimic IBS and lots of other things and has a bunch of symtoms... look it up.

Joan I'm so sorry you had to through this today. Find another doctor who reads studies about IBS and believes it is a real thing.

As for your kid with PB- that cracks me up. I have plenty of those days, except two of my boys still like to wipe their faces with their sleves. Life of a mom.

5 years ago I had a colonoscopy with biopsy which I guess is an accurate test for celiac, but I'm getting a blood test too.

I have a 12 year old son, a 9 year old daughter, and the surprise son who is 2 and was the peanut butter culprit. Actually, the Drs office called back and apologized profusely. The Dr gave me a better explanation of why he doesn't use the IBS dx. He says he doesn't like to lump everyone in one category because the symptoms and treatment are so varied. He looks at the symptoms and rules out other diseases, then treats the problem symptoms presented. This makes more sense to me than just believing no one has IBS, so I don't feel so discounted. He was very nice, and I have to admit it is difficult to accomodate my free hours as I have to take the kids to school and pick them up so if I'm not done with an appointment I just have to leave. I have to admit I'm feeling hopeless as everyone who follow Heather's diet does so much better and I'm not. I hope they can find a reason.

Wow! I'm impressed. A doctor called and apologized? Okay, that's a FIRST. Maybe others have had this experience, but I certainly haven't -- nor have I heard of it.

So did you make another appointment? What does he plan to do for you, Joan?

Actually he apologized profusely. He was very kind and scheduled more tests for me. I'm feeling very grumpy and hopeless as nothing seems to be working and I don't really think I have fructose or lactose intolerance. Hope I'm less crabby tomorrow. I am also getting a cold so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Wow! I thought I was frazzled with 3! The peanut butter was added for humor not frustration. I had just been hopeful that this diet change would work for me. I can deal with good and bad days but get frustrated with daily attacks of varying degrees. Maybe this food allergy thing will answer some questions. I feel like my kids get cheated when I don't feel well and that is what frustrates me the most.

Joan, I don't remember, do you have C or D? Because I'm C and I have to admit I still don't feel great all the time either. When I first started this diet I was alternating C and D and still having terrible and painful attacks at least once a month, often more frequently. Since starting this diet I can say I haven't had a full-blown attack in about 6 months, and I'm amazingly thankful for that. But now that I've gone to plain old C I do still have lots of bloating and just plain discomfort, and it still interferes with my life, just not to the same degree. So to make a long story short, you're not alone! I know how frustrating this can be, and I hope you find some relief. That's so sweet of you to worry about this for your kids' sakes. It is sad that they have to see their mommy feeling so badly.

Thanks Kree. I'm sure I'll have a better attitude when this cold is done. My kids are great. I try for the most part to hide my attacks, but when they are really bad they always ask "is your irritable bowel bothering you?" Hopefully the mindfulness will make a difference. It feels funny because I'm in the beginning and have to practice staying in the moment and not letting my mind wander to other things. I have to pick one thing a day to do this with so today I picked taking a shower. I had to experience it as if it were the first time and pay attention to everything in the shower. It took longer to finish my shower, and felt funny, but I understand the point is to learn to shut out all those thoughts of the past and future that people tend to worry about instead of attending to the moment. I definitely need more practice!

Wow, as simple as that concept is I bet it's really difficult! My mind wanders constantly, I can't imagine not thinking about other things while doing something like showering. What a great way to start out though! Good luck!

They did that 5 years ago and it was negative. The Dr didn't see a point in repeating it since my symptoms haven't changed.
