I almost slipped last night and ate something bad. I've had IBS awhile and at point was going six months without a D attack. But the last six months it's been on average one a month. And for the past month or two it's been one every two weeks or less.
My last attack was Friday night a week ago. Since then I've been eating only foods on the "safe" list and have been doing well. But yesterday was a frustrating day and by dinner time I was so aggravated I said "Awright, I'll have the damned white rice for dinner, but then I'm going to have ice cream!"
Thank goodness I caught myself in the act of "stinkin thinkin" and stopped it! I left the kitchen, went and sat down and did deep breathing, then was able to go back and rationally decide to have oatmeal instead of the damned white rice, and NOT to have the evil ice cream!
It was the mysterious spiritual power of this message board that made the difference...I didn't want to have to confess to all of you that I'd been so silly!!
Thanks for being there. I now have 6 days symptom free -- let's see if I can make it seven!

Hey, good for you, Laura! I think you're doing wonderfully. And only one attack every other week? Wow! Mine are weekly.
You really hate the white rice, eh? It's real good in soup with veggies. However, I know how overdosing on one particular food can become pretty BOR-RING.
You like ice cream I assume. Have you seen all my posts about Soy Dream frozen dessert? Yesterday I got hooked on the mocha fudge (ooooh), but my old fave was vanilla or strawberry swirl. I don't miss dairy ice cream AT ALL now. Why don't you give it a try?
Don't be shy about confessing your sins. We've all done it. Haven't we, guys? After all, it's only fair that you suffer along with us.
Glad you're doing so well. Keep up the good work!

Good for you Laura!
I would've had the ice cream...being the weak person I am LOL You should be proud that you didn't.
I have cheated quite a few times..but then a person gets to the point where the pain isn't worth it. Until then don't beat yourself over it.

Those are two flavors. My favorite was vanilla, my second favorite strawberry swirl (it does have vanilla in it). I'm not crazy about the chocolate. Blueberry is good (but I've always been crazy about anything blueberry). Now I'm hooked on mocha fudge.
I confess I have a little every night before bed. It's my treat of the day. If I've had an ADB, though, I pass on the "ice cream." After all, I have this board to answer to! (And these guys can be pretty brutal!)

LauraSue, congrats on making it through without slipping! Good for you! I agree with the others that there are some pretty amazing soy ice creams out there, so ice cream is one thing you don't have to miss!!! I highly recommend Soy Delicious Cookie Avalanche. It seriously tastes exactly like cookies n' cream ice cream. It's my favorite!

Okay, this one goes on the list. It's gotta be good with a name like that!
I keep a piece of paper and pen next to the computer here, which is my "Wants" list. When you guys recommend something special like this, I add it to the list. Then, when we go down to the health food store, I'm ready! I stock up on all these goodies and, together with my hubby, we have our infamous "taste tests".
Yeah, this one goes on the list!

Funny thing...I read your post and I remembered I might have bought something like that for my boys. I looked in the freezer and there it was. I'm eating it right now...it's tasty, almost as tasty as Tofutti's vanilla fudge. I just finished it so I'm sure I'll buy some more. It's hard for me to stop when I get started.

Bev, that's a great idea about keeping a list! I see so many great-looking products on the boards, and probably forget half of them! I gotta start doing that!
Dolphin, I can't believe it was right there in your freezer! What a wonderful surprise that must have been, lol!

Kree, It was a very nice surprise to find the cookie avalanche in my freezer. I better get some more before my kids realize that there is no more...oops At least there is some Tofutti Cuties to keep them happy. Now that I'm eating their ice cream I'll have to stock up.

Thanks to all of you for the support and encouragement. Ice cream is normally something I can live without, but when I frazzled and crazed, I occasionaly crave it. Chocolate on the other hand I have to have one little taste of per day to keep from feeling deprived, and it's never been a problem.
And I usually love plain white rice. It's always been one of my comfort foods, since childhood. I was just in a really bad mood and was using the rice to project all my negativity on! Poor rice...
Now I've made it seven days!!
Thanks again,
Laura

I'm so excited that other people enjoy tofutti cuties as much as me. Not being able to enjoy ice cream has been a very hard habit to break. I used to love my ben and jerry's chubby hubby! Just realized that you are from Rocheser, I actually grew up there in Brighton. Its good to speak with someone from a familiar place!

There is a great restaurant called Aladdins in Pittsford and on Monroe Ave that has the best hummus, if you like it. I always felt better when I ate it!

Yeah, I've been eating Toffuti Cuties for years too! My cousin has a milk allergy, so my family always got those for him when we were younger and I always wanted some too!
So you grew up in Brighton? Neat! It's always nice to hear from a former Rochesterian. So where are you living now? I hope it's somewhere warmer, it's been sooo cold here lately!
I love Aladdins!! I went to college at Nazareth, so I ate at the one in Pittsford all the time! It was my favorite restaurant for a while. It probably still would be, except I always got the greek salads and spanakopitas, which would kill me now. I miss them so much! Their pasta's good, but it's just not the same. I'll have to try the hummus next time I go!

We had one of our infamous taste tests again today. The challengers were:
Soy Delicious Cookie Avalanche Soy Dream Mocha Fudge Soy Dream Vanilla Soy Dream Dreamwich
AND THE WINNER IS: TA HA! Mocha Fudge. HANDS DOWN! No contest! OMG!!!!! Forget cookie avalanche, forget dreamwich, forget vanilla. I can't stop eating the mocha fudge. I am SOOOO going to pay for this!
Very disappointing, however: the health food store did not have the ginger Altoids. RATS! I can't find this stuff ANYWHERE! (But I did stock up on soy parmesan, soy sour cream, and--of course--mocha fudge.)
OOooooohh..... life is sweet.

I am a huge fam of all of the flavors!!! My family gobbles it up as fast as I do. Give the brand a try if you really want ice cream.

Joan, what can I say? You've found me out -- AGAIN! So how come I can never get away with anything in these boards?
Actually, I figured, okay, if I have something that's a little too high in fat, if I eat just a LITTLE of it, and combine it with something that's ZERO fat, then the TOTAL of the WHOLE MEAL is within the acceptable percentage range.
Now that makes sense, doesn't it? Well? Doesn't it?
...... Don't tell Heather......

Yes, I don't see anything wrong with a little soy dream now and then. You were just funny with your fat crusade when you weren't feeling well. I will have to try some of these flavors. So far I've only had the rice dream.

Oh -- OH -- OH! -- Girlfriend, you have SOOOO got a treat in store! Get yourself down to the nearest health food store as soon as you can!
Yeah, I'm like that. I get off on a tangent, and I'm FOCUSED! Then I get burned out. It's like those old wind-up toys, you wind them up, they spin and spin and spin until they wear themselves down.
I'm just waiting to get wound up again!
