Due to keeping a detailed diary I have found that stress and anxiety are giving me the most if not all my grief (causing attacks and D). Other problems (bloating and gas are manageable through dietary modification). I have started Mike's hypnotherapy but just recently and I think it will be a while for that to work. Have any of you gone to psychiatrists/psychologists and found that helpful? What about meds? I don't want anything long-term as I don't need another problem. Anyone take Buspar? It's not supposed to be habit-forming. What about the others(Ativan, Xanax)? When taken as needed are there any problems that arise from that? Thanks.

Have you tried the hypnosis? IBS and anticipatory anxiety are kind of a behavioural pattern - an anxiety habit that is self-exacerbating and hard to break, but that's what you need to learn to do - break that pattern. It's not necessarily the anxiety that caused your attacks to start in the first place, but an awareness of some discomfort down there that caused anxiety in certain situations that this would get worse and lead to a full attack - which of course it does when you become tense due to the worry and attention you're focusing on your gut.

Personally, I'm sure some drugs may be helpful but I'd try everything else I could think of first.

I'm just starting the hypnosis program and am hoping that will help my problems in this area.

I plan on using the IBS diet starting tomorrow so I´m sure the bloating and gas will subside some like you said. But I also agree with you about the stress. I have anxiety and it got so bad for a while. The IBS started mid way after finding out that i had an anxiety disorder and sought help through a self help program and it definately helped. I do take ativan when I feel especially anxious or have insomnia. The anxiety comes back sometimes pretty heavy but other times Im good. Life has thrown some traumatic situations at me recently and some life changes have come about and that is when my D comes on non stop almost. When the anxiety occurs. But this new feeling of constant bloating and weight gain and pain has only been with me for 6 months and Im ready to stop it.
Therapy helps for the anxiety and it trains your mind ,like how you have trained your mind to have the scary thoughts, to think positive again. I did mine through tapes and workbooks.
