So i recently came across this website and Heather's book. And by the way thank you thank you Heather I finally feel like I have hope again! Anyway I've read of the benefits of probiotics however I started them twice and found they made me have a severe stomach ache/nausea. I asked my doctor and she said this is possible as it is readjusting the bacteria in your gut. She told me to give it 10 days on them and I should be feeling better, but I'm nervous to start them again. Anyone else had any trouble with these. I was taking the brand FloraMore.

FloraMore contains FOS as well as the probiotics. FOS is a rapidly fermenting soluble fiber that can cause problems for many individuals with IBS. For more information check the first three links in my signature. Is your doctor a naturopathic doctor or was it your GP or GI doc? Also, this probiotic has not been clinically tested for effectiveness for IBS. Some probiotics that have been clinically tested on individuals with IBS that showed some efficacy are Align, VSL#3 and digestive advantage.

Oh wow thank you so much for answering. I am newly diagnosed so I am still learning about what is safe and what is not. I will try Align. I had just been to my regular doctor for another issue and asked her since I was there. I also have a vitamin D deficiency so she prescribed me 2000 IU daily, however I also found those to be upsetting me lately too. I also have mouth lozengers of Vitamin D by SolarRay, would those be better to take? Or does can Vitamin D also be hard for ppl with IBS to take?

It is likely best to take the Vitamin D by tablet. I take a 1000 IU tablet twice a day. It doesn't effect my IBS. You might try spreading the 2000 IU dose out over the day. AND check the ingredients to make sure it doesn't contain any IBS unfriendly ingredients.

Ok I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but by tablet do you mean the prescription form my doctor gave or the Solar Ray kind?

Not sure why you would need a prescription as 1000 IU vitamin D tablets are available over the counter. I was talking about vitamin D tablets not vitamin D lozenges. The Solaray lozenges contain Xylitol a sugar alcohol that some IBS people find to be a problem. Heather talks about them on under artificial sweeteners on this web page where she says "Saccharine, Equal and Nutrasweet (both aspartame), sorbitol and other sugar alcohols (xylitol, malitol), and Splenda (sucralose) are the most popular artificial sweeteners in the US. They can all cause digestive side effects ranging from gas and bloating to severe abdominal cramps and urgent diarrhea. In some cases, they can provoke these symptoms in people who don't even have IBS, so imagine what they can do to you."

I'm honestly not sure why she gave them to me via prescription I suppose to make sure I had them. But wow obviously I still have alot to learn on what I can and cannot eat and what meds to take. More times then not it seems like I shouldn't take stuff.
