I'm thinking about trying an acidophilus supplement or a digestive enzyme to help with D and stomach upset but I'm overwhelmed by how many brands there are. Does anyone have one that they recommend and has really worked well for them? Thanks

There are very few probiotics that have been clinically tested for effectiveness in managing IBS symptoms. Acidophilus has not been shown to be clinically effective. Probiotics such as Align, VSL#3 and Digestive Advantage are examples of the few probiotics that have been shown to be clinically effective. However, if you want to take Acidophilus for general GI health then any brand that does not contain IBS unfriendly ingredients such as inulin would work.

I'm curious...what "ingredients" are not safe when it comes to medications? Are these listed in Heather's books which recently I purchased....

Generally speaking they are trigger foods or ingredients such as those discussed on this web site and in Heather's books (caffeine, lactose, artificial sweeteners and colors, etc). As well check the first two links in my signature. These link to articles that talk about FODMAP approach which is a clinically tested dietary approach to managing functional bowel disorders such as IBS. These foods some of which can be used as fillers in medications particularly OTC medications are potential triggers too.

I use Garden of Life, Primal Defense Ultra. I wasn't using anything for awhile, after going thorugh quite a few, but I love this stuff!
