Hello Everyone!

I'm new to this site, found it VERY helpful and interesting as I'm in the middle of a possible diagnosis of IBS. Celiac Disease has been ruled out as I'm not allergic to Gluten, however when I went on a 2 week Gluten free diet I was feeling better except for one incident. I see and hear Dairy is a trigger. Does that mean in all forms? Meaning, I see Baked Nachos are safe to eat but I believe there are dairy type ingredients in it. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Welcome to the board,

It cannot hurt to remove all forms of dairy for a while and see if there is an improvement. Many people with IBS report an improvement in symptoms when all forms of dairy are removed from their diet.

The removal of wheat from the diet even when Celiacs disease is ruled out frequently reduces IBS symptoms because wheat is high in a constituent called fructans. Fructans are indigestible but can be fermented by bacteria in the colon causing gas and bloating. Fructans are one of the five FODMAP groups know from clinical studies on IBS suffers to cause bloating and gas in individuals with functional bowel disorder such as IBS. You can read more about FODMAPs in the first two links in my signature.

I follow Heather's diet modified to remove some FODMAPs with reasonable success. Ask lots of questions there are many knowledgeable individuals on the board.

Hi Syl,

Thank you so much for the helpful information! Very much appreciated! I just noticed before your post about FODMAP. What is that?

FODMAP as an acronym for Fermentable, Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides and Polyols. These are a group of fermentable short-chain carbohydrates that can be rapidly fermented in the colon causing bloating, gas, distention and discomfort in individuals with functional bowel disorder such as IBS. The clinical trials in Australia and the UK found a reduction in symptoms for about 75% of patients functional bowel disorders. The results have been so good that a large clinical trial is about to begin in the US. You can read more about in this article in the Wall Street Journal

The first two links in my signature give a good description of the FODMAP diet.

I believe Heather has a recipe for baked Nachos in her cookbook (if that's what you're referring to), but those are made with soy cheese. Dairy is generally not too safe for IBS, but there are many dairy free cheese alternatives! (They don't have to be soy either, the one I eat is both dairy and soy free)
