Constipation and out of routine....

I suffered for a long time with 'morning urgency diarrhea'. However, over the last year and a half I have had a baby and have moved out of our house and been staying at various friends and family. I have been back and forward to England (I live in Paris, France) three times , to Nice and now I'm in Australia living at my uncle's. Since moving out of our flat, I have been suffering from bouts of constipation which doesn't respond to any dietary treatment and passes within a few days of it's own accord.I did think it was related to hormonal changes (the fact of having a baby and still not having regular periods) but then I read somewhere that travel and being out of a regular routine can upset the bowels.
Has anyone else had this experience? What to do??

Claire, have you been to a doctor? Seen a GI? Do you have a diagnosis? What has your doctor said? I think that's where you need to start.

I had IBS diagnosed when I was last in Australia in 1999. I've seen tons of doctors and specialists, had every test you can imagine in Paris where I live and the end result...it's all in my head and I was sent away with some anti-depressants. The French don't seem to have heard of IBS so I have had very little support in all the time I've been there (since 1998).
I too am convinced it's stress/hormone related and the result of this I believe leaves the bowel open to breed parasites, fungi and I do think there is something to be said for the 'Leaky Gut Syndrome'.

I have suffered from constipation most of my life, and it's definitely worse when I'm out of my regular routine. For me, I seem to have my best BMs if I wake up, have a hot drink (usually peppermint tea) and a light breakfast about 45 minutes later, and then relax and continue sipping my tea until things start to move. If I have to get up and go right away in the mornings it almost always brings on a bout of constipation! When I was student teaching I had a different routine, and always seemed to go while the students were at specials, because that's what my body was used to. Even though you're traveling, maybe there's a way you can establish a portable routine, such as getting your body used to when you'll be eating in the morning? Just a thought. I also think hormones have a lot to do with it, too, and that's something we can't really control.

One other thing, you said your constipation usually passes within a few days. I read somewhere that you're not really constipated if you have a good BM at least once every 3 days. Granted, it's different for everyone, but I just thought I'd point out that it's not necessary to go every day. Good luck getting things under control!

It is a well known fact and oh so common that women get constipated when they travel, IBS or no IBS.

Only solution I've found is to get drastic at those times, more fiber and possibly an herbal supplement, maybe even adding a little milk of magnesia. It seems like an overdose at the time, and if at home, relaxed and under normal circumstances it would throw me into a "D" state, but on the road it keeps me a regular gal. All this I had to learn the hard way, over many years of being in misery when I traveled, even BEFORE IBS.....
