Because of the nature of my symptoms, always in the same place - my ascending colon, and the fact that I have back pain in the same spot, on my right, I've always wondered if there was something structurally hindering my bowel from working properly. Finally this week I went to see a highly-recommended chiropractor.
After a thorough examination he noted subluxations (misalignment) throughout my lower spine, creating inflammation and tension on my right side - the entire area is always very tender. As he explained, subluxations and inflammation compromise the nerves' ability to send messages to the systems/body parts they control. Since the nerves that come from the lower spine are those that govern the colon, he was not surprised I had such persistent IBS symptoms which haven't responded to other treatments I've tried. Of course it is a chicken/egg scenario - did the spinal problems cause the IBS, or has IBS caused me to hold my body in such ways as to throw my vertebrae out of alignment...
We have started a course of adjustments. I will report back here in 6 weeks or so to give an update on my progress.
I was surprised when I did a search on these boards for chiropractor, I found no discussions of using chiro for their IBS - the posts I found were unrelated to IBS.
Any thoughts, anyone?

I certainly would be interested to know how it goes for you - I did find this:

There have been no well-designed studies of chiropractic for IBS. However, chiropractors report that spinal manipulation may improve symptoms of IBS in some people. In these cases, spinal manipulation may have a balancing effect on the nerves that supply impulses to the intestinal tract.

My chiropractor is doing research on IBS. Here is the link to his first study results, peer reviewed and published.
