It is a standard Lactobacillus acidophilus with no unusual ingredient. This bacteria has not been shown to have much effect on IBS symptoms.

It seems probiotics like Align, VSL#3 and Digestive Advantage which has been clinically tested are not available in the UK. And most of the probiotic products that contain useful bacteria such as Bifidobacterium infantis also contains FOS which is problematic for individuals with IBS. You might ask your Doctor next time you see him for advice.

Is there any negative (other than cost) to taking Align with another probiotic such as VSL#3?

VSL#3 contain Bifidobacterium which is the only bacteria in Align. It is unlikely to cause any negative effects.

FYI - VSL#3 contains Bifidobacterium (B. longum, B. infantis and B. breve), Lactobacillus (L. acidophilus, L. casei, L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus and L. plantarum) and Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus.
