I'm going away for 3 days this week. I will be staying in a hotel. We are going to a concert and have dinner tickets (I didn't realize that when I bought them or I wouldn't have). I just got the menu off their website and I'm freaking out. Here it is. Help me figure out how to survive this event PLEASE!
Menu: all you can eat buffet which consists of - Full Salad Bar, Wild Mushroom Raviolis, Mushroom Rice Pilaf, Salmon With Mango Sauce, Marinated Chicken Breast With Porcini Mushroom Ragout, Carved Prime Rib, Garlic Bread And Raspberry Sorbet For Dessert.

Sugar, do you eat Salmon?
Try not to freak out, that becomes the problem.
"worrying does not change the outcome."
Take some food with you perhaps, your safe foods.
Only eat samll amounts.
Perhaps ask if something special can be made, most restaurants will accomadate a person with special needs.
This actually looks the safest
"Mushroom Rice Pilaf, Salmon With Mango Sauce" ibs wise, if you like salmon.
The biggest thing is don't worry and stress out. Then you will have problems for sure.
This is an example here. This is one thing CBT for IBS is all about.
"The cognitive therapy part of CBT helps individuals to identify, challenge and replace unhealthy thought patterns. When we are thinking clearly, we are able to deal with the world in a calm, rational manner. However, our thinking often gets distorted, due to our personalities, our past history, our emotional state or lack of information. When thinking gets distorted it can lead to excessive emotional reactions. For an individual with IBS, these thought distortions may lead to an anxiety response that can trigger symptoms. For example, if a person with IBS thinks "My stomach is rumbling. Uh, oh! I know I am going to be sick. What is I can't make it to the bathroom? This is terrible!", that person is going to experience anxiety and perhaps set off the very symptoms they are afraid of. If instead, the person thinks, "Just because my stomach is making some noise does not necessarily mean I am going to have symptoms. I will just focus on what I am doing and see what happens", that person will remain calm and be less likely to stimulate their digestive system."

I agree with Shawn - those items sound the safest. And with checking if they make special meals. Doesn't hurt to ask!
Also, take with you your soluble fiber & some tea (peppermint, chamo, etc. - your fav). Maybe have a small, safe snack before you go to dinner to buffer your tummy also.
And, try not to get stressed - I know, easier said than done. Try to focus on how much fun the concert will be!

Well, Val, the things that jumped out at me were the salmon, the rice, and the mango. I recall Heather mentioning all three as "safe" foods -- in fact, didn't she sing praises of salmon and its essential omega-3 oils?
Certainly they'll serve some kind of bread (practically everywhere serves sourdough or French) that you can consume beforehand.
If it were me, I just wouldn't eat; it just ain't worth it. Food doesn't agree with me. I'd just enjoy the concert, and hopefully it will be loud enough to drown out the rumbling from down below.

I agree, the salmon sounds the safest. I have no clue what pilaf means, but the rice would be good as well. You could probably swing buy a grocery store or sumthin and buy some bagels and eat one or two before the meal. Or maybe just take an extra dose of fiber, just to be safe. Hope this helps! Have fun!!

Peaches has a great idea here! Bagels are TERRIFIC (I hate the high calorie count though) and fairly easy to stuff in your suitcase. I like the kind with sun-dried tomatoes in them. When I toast them, they smell so good (and taste even better!), my hubby thinks I'm making pizza. Try 'em, Val!

In the fall i went to a dinner & concert and I actually had no idea what was on the menu before i even got there. It was a birthday surprise for me but luckily it was my mom who took me and she also has IBS. The restaurant sounded like a place we could probably eat, we just took the risk and went in and looked at the menu, would've gona somewhere else if there was nothing for us. We told the waiter that we had to watch what we ate and he was fine with mix-matching food off the menu to make a meal. Got a plain piece of chicken, some kind of small potatoes (forgot what kind), and some cooked veggies. Made it very clear that everything had to be very plain!!! Don't like risking any of the seasonings or anything that they could put on it. Also there were dinner rolls so i ate a couple before hand. It was good and my tummy was fine!! Hope they can make arrangements for you. Even if you can call them beforehand and ask if it's possible. Good Luck and enjoy the show!

Thank you everyone! All your advise is great. We decided to skip the dinner altogether. It's a loss of $30.00 a piece, but we will both be more comfortable. Next time I'll make sure I don't accidently get dinner tickets. I plan to take bagels and bread and crackers and lots of tea with me. I found a restaurant there that looks like we can manage so we can also do egg beaters and baked potatoes there hopefully.
I woke up day before yeasturday with a really bad sore throat and have been sick since so even the trip is iffy at the moment. I have until Tuesday to get better so we can cancel our rooms if we have to. Isn't life funny here I am worrying about the food and a virus snuck up on me.

Val, I'm so glad your wrote. I'd been thinking of you since your original post and wondering what you had decided to do. Sounds like you'll be happier knowing you won't risk an attack, HOWEVER, weren't you just a little curious as to what was on the buffet that wasn't listed? For that price I'll bet you could have found lots of IBS safe foods.......on the salad bar alone....

Well, no I thought that they had probably listed everything except whats included in the salad bar and at this point I probably couldn't eat it. My fiance hates mushrooms and doesn't eat beef or salmon so he is also not thrilled about the menu. I think if we go (I'm still sick with a bug) we will play it safe.
