I have been reading this site and following the EFI diet since Oct 11th (I remember exactly because I had a horrible time in the days following our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner, which is what prompted me to do some online research and find this site). I can't thank Heather and all of you enough for this site and the information contained.

I have suffered with severe constipation for as long as I can remember, but in the past couple of years it has become almost unbearable, to the point where I was missing work at times, I was in so much pain and discomfort. Every doctor I have seen has sent me for tests that came back negative (I have had almost all the recommended tests to rule other things out), but not one has ever mentioned the fact that IBS can cause constipation and not just diarrhea. They all advised me to eat more fibre and drink more water. I was at the point where I was eating so much fibre it was ridiculous, but things were getting worse, not better. It made no sense to me until I came here.

In the last 6 weeks things have improved so much. I can now make sense of how my body reacts to food. I still have gas and abdominal pain at times but I have not had one severe episode of constipation. It feels like a miracle to me. I am now tracking everything I eat and making note of what IF foods seem to cause me problems. No, I still don't have a definitive doctor's diagnosis for IBS but at my next appointment I will bring it up and see if he is willing to run some more tests. In the meantime, I will continue to follow this way of eating because it most definitely agrees with me!

Can you do us other sufferers a favor, and please post a 3 day sample of your diet?
Thanks.

I am just following Heather's guidelines about SF vs IF, and avoiding trigger foods. I had pretty much given up most of the trigger foods already anyways, except dairy. So now I use soy milk instead, and try to avoid most other dairy. I cook all my own food, for the most part....soups, vegetarian dishes, fish, shrimp, that kind of thing. I try to always eat SF on an empty stomach, and have at least 50% SF on my plate, etc. It was the IF vs SF that I was not aware of, and my diet had become heavily IF based before I read this site (based on doctor's recommendations).

So you don't eat out ever?
You don't buy pre-made quick re-heat food?

I used to eat out a lot, but over the past couple of years I have started to enjoy cooking fresh, healthy food so I don't go out often anymore. When I do, I usually pay for it. As much as I try to pick healthy menu items they are most often too high in fat, or I give in to temptation and eat something I shouldn't. I am not saying I do not have any symptoms anymore! But they are much, much less and they are manageable.

No, I do not buy any pre-made, quick reheat food. I tend to cook in larger batches than I can eat in a meal, so I refrigerate and/or freeze my left overs for lunches at work or quick dinners. I try not to buy any type of mixes or convenience food either, I make most things from scratch now.

Can I just say doctors really suck? I had my appointment today, which I made to discuss IBS-C and see about getting a diagnosis. I told him I have had C for years and years, all the advice I'd received previously (more fibre, more water, stool softeners, etc) and yet no one ever mentioned IBS-C. Told him how I was to the point of only eating fruit, veg, whole grains and water and things were still bad (and sometimes worse). Told him about EFI diet since Thanksgiving and how it has helped. Since I had colonoscopy 3 years ago with nothing detrimental found, he said there wasn't any point to dong more tests. Just continue on eating EFI if it's helping. Which it obviously is, so I will, but it would be nice to be able to say I've ruled everything else out!
