Candida v IBS

My doctors diagnosed me with having IBS; probably because they could not find anything wrong.

My RD told me that IBS is a "dumping ground" that doctors put people in who have functional disorders, and that more likely I have candida and should do the candida program:

1) Diet
2) Supplements

The diet is like EFI in some ways, but differs in that it is low carb, low sugar whereas EFI has you eating a lot of carbs (like bread) as SF.

Curious on your thoughts.....

There isn't a connection between Candida overgrowth and IBS.

Search the board and you will find lots of posting. You might start here and have a look at this thread.

After more than 25 years of speculation about the role of Candida in IBS no connection has been found by IBS researchers. Here is an excerpt from a letter to the editor in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine The role of Candida albicans in the pathogenesis of food-intolerant irritable bowel syndrome

Quote:

Middleton and colleagues' are to be congratulated in demonstrating that there is no conclusive link between overgrowth of intestinal Candida albicans and the symptomatology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Sadly, I suspect that the popular health magazines and alternative practitioners who persuade patients that these symptoms are directly linked to the pseudoscience of 'leaky bowels' and Candida toxins' are unlikely to alter their views.

Here a link to the original article that concluded "Overgrowth of C. albicans is not the cause of food intolerance in patients with IBS and anticandidal drugs should not be used in the treatment of this condition."

The Mayo Clinic has a nice write-up on A nutrition counselor told me a "candida cleanse" diet would cure my fatigue, headaches and weight gain. What conditions does a candida cleanse diet treat?.

Umm...no offense but an RD told me (multiple RDs) that IBS is a misdiagnosis given by and to people with GI disorders. It pretty much is a dumping ground that people get labled with.

The question isn't "Does" Candida cause IBS, the question is, do I/people have Candida or IBS?

Julie Starkel of Green Lake Nutrition who practices alternative holistic medicine and was listed as a referrence here said I did.

So I don't understand, are you telling me a liscened professional who specializes in this field is wrong?

To me, it seems this is a good old battle between alternative medicine vs. academics/western medicines.

At least holistic practices offer hope and answers whereas academicians offer nothing for us sufferers.

Well, what are you waiting for? It sounds like you believe in the likelihood of candida being your problem. Experiment with the diet and see if you don't feel better. You don't need permission from anyone on here to do that. It surely won't hurt you, eating whole, natural foods. Do what you feel is right for you. I'm interested to hear an update from you if you decide to follow through with your doctor's suggestions. Actions speak louder than words!

I'm confused and want to do the right thing.
Following the SCD diet is very time consuming, and I don't want to follow it if in fact it is junk science.
Herein lies the confusion.

I thought you said you had candida back in January with shawneric?

Candida overgrowth and a too low ph are very common in people- not at all related to IBS. It is common to have both disorders. You don't have to go crazy with diet to help the candida. You can do some things to improve it gradually IMO like avoiding yeast and sugar and taking probitotics but not cutting out all carbs for now. What do you think about that?

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I don't think the SCD is junk science. Many people have been helped by it, as I've read on other forums. I did not follow that particular diet, but rather a low carb/high protein diet....somewhat of an antifungal diet. I know for me personally, I don't do well with a lot of grains (particularly wheat) and sugar, processed or otherwise. Others can eat those things with no visible problems. After going on an antifungal diet, and staying on a modified version even now, I feel so much better than before. So, it was cause/effect for me. Coincidental, or not, if I got well after experimenting with the diet, I've got to think my symptoms were fungus related. I had taken antibiotics over my teen years, was on the birth control pill for a number of years, and lived in water-damaged homes with damp basements, providing many opportunities for fungus to proliferate through my body. There are over 400 kinds of fungus known to cause disease in man. I don't care if there is not a book, person, or double-blind study to explain why I got well. I just know what worked for me, and intend to keep on that path. You won't know what is the right thing, until you at least try it. No one can predict the outcome for you with certainty.

You would be better NOT to post other comments about the SCD, or other diets on this board, (maybe the living room?)as this board deals with Heather's diet and such comments as ours are off topic and have no place here.

Best to you...
