Hi Kristi ,

Microscopic Colitis is classified as an IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). This terminology is not to be confused with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Lymphocytic and Collagenous Colitis are the 2 main subtypes of Microscopic Colitis.

Here is a nice overview of Microscopic Colitis.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/collagenous-colitis/DS00824

The diagnosis of LC was arrived at in your son's case by taking biopsies of the colon wall during the colon exam, and then having a pathologist analyze the specimens under a microscope. (This is why is called Microscopic Colitis as it can only be diagnosed in this manner.) In MC the inflammatory disease process is NOT located in the lining of the colon, rather it is located in the tissues of the colon structure that are beneath the mucosal lining of the colon. This type of colitis is unusual in children, but is NOT UNHEARD OF in children either.

You may want to see if you can find other people with children with this condition by going to this web-site:

Often it takes a combination of medication and diet to help with controlling this condition.

Since you child has been diagnosed with Lymphocytic colitis, he does have an INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.

This is different that IBS which is a term used to describe an assortment of GI symptoms, for which no organic casue can be found.

It might be better for you to post on this topic in the classification below which is titled "Crohn's Disease and Colitis Board".

It is difficult to understand the statement "my pedi thinks I need to give up my "obsessive" quest to find a cause and accept that it is IBS and just try to deal with the symptoms". He/she can be forgiven for not understanding Microscopic Colitis, as he/she probably has never seen a case before. However, -- if there is resistance to learning about something new – then that is unforgivable, at least in my book.

In reality, the cause(s) of Microscopic (Lymphocytyc) Colitis are NOT KNOWN at this point in time. It is most often considered to be something of an Auto-Immune condition -- what has triggered this type of situation is ????
