Heather says "Substitute cocoa powder for solid chocolate in baking - fabulous chocolate cakes are your IBS-safe reward!" and "Chocolate milk [soy, rice, etc] is delicious cold and heated up for glass of hot cocoa!"
I make chocolate syrup from cocoa and use it all the time. Enjoy!

Anyone happen to know if cocoa powder is permissible for GERD? I'm guessing not, but it can't hurt to ask......

In this newsletter Heather says "Unfortunately, chocolate in any form can worsen reflux, so you may well have to forego this particular treat altogether. Why the discrepancy? Chocolate contains theobromine (a compound that's also found in tea and coffee), which relaxes the esophageal sphincter muscle (just like peppermint), and triggers reflux. So chocolate, like peppermint, is one of the few foods that can be perfectly safe for lower, but not upper, GI problems. "

Do you use unsweeted cocoa powder and how do you make the syrup? Sorry if it is a silly question.

I use Rodelle cocoa powder because it is very finely ground and has a wonderful rich flavor. Here is the recipe. I believe it is on the board somewhere.
3/4 cup cocoa powder 1 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon decaf instant coffee 1 teaspoon vanilla pinch sea salt 1 cup water
Mix dry ingredients well in a pan. Slowly add water and vanilla until powder is reasonably well dissolved. Heat on medium with regular stirring until mixture just begins to boil. Turn off heat and leave pot on burner for 4-5 mins stirring periodically. Put in container, store in fridge use as required. I love it on toast

I was searching for cacoa powder (and found this post), since I found out this also triggers my IBS..
It triggers nausea coming from my bowel (about 1-1.5 day after eating it, not directly). So I guess it is not an upper GI problem in my case?

meds: lansoprazol+macrogol
started EFI +FODMAPs 1/2011. 'Relapse' for 8 months. Now partly back on track again with the diet..

I guess it's a dutch brand.. 'Fair Trade Original/Max Havelaar'.
The ingredients just say 'cocoa powder'. It's biological, made from beans from Latin America. Nothing strange I guess??
