Interesting article I found. Although, I wonder about the broccoli...seems that it could cause more problems, but I think some people can handle it. Not promoting it, just looking for discussion on it.
An excerpt:
Quote:
The study found that soluble fibre from plantain (a close relative of the banana) and broccoli specifically stopped the bacteria E.coli from crossing into cells in the intestine.
Professor Jonathan Rhodes who worked on the study, said: 'What's interesting about this paper is that it shows, for the first time, that soluble plant fibre is able to stop bacteria from finding its way through the lining of the intestine.'

Looks interesting. I eat lots of bananas but I cannot tolerate broccoli. The study claims that the soluble fiber from these foods prevent E-coli bacteria from finding its way through the lining of the intestine. Not sure how this finding would be beneficial to those individuals with IBS compared to those with IBD.

Hi,
Thought I'd chip in on this since I live in the UK. The Daily Mail, the paper that reported the research, often publishes stories linked to digestive/GI complaints. I personally ignore anything they publish; it's akin to taking medical advice from a plumber.
The 'journalism' is sloppy, right-wing, racist, and there 'research' is non-existent. They produce scare-mongering stories and ridiculous headlines on the flimsiest of evidence. (The evils of immigration is a favourite)
Anyway, just my thoughts (and bias) on the subject.

You may find this report of the findings in the research article more complete. Here is a link to the BBC's report on the article too.
