How much fiber per day do we need, and how can we get it?
I am IBS-C with lots of bloating and distension.

I follow the EFI diet, yet I usually am only at 15-20 g NOT taking into account I have 2 TSP of Benefiber.
Any ideas?

You may find the medical article about fiber and colorectal diseases linked to in the reference below of interest. It has a different approach to fiber and C that you might find useful.

Thanks but basically that study said nothing about how much fiber to have...and seemed to give more Questions than Answers.

There isn't a magic number of grams of fiber per day that is sure to help those with IBS-C. Some people with IBS-C may not be helped by increasing fiber or modifying diet at all. You might have to consult with a GI doctor for meds to help with your C. When is the last time you spoke with a GI doctor about managing your IBS-C?

Well I tried Zelnorm, Rifaxmin, and Amitiza, both of which didn't really work.
Last time I spoke was 6 weeks ago, when Miralax was recommended, which obviously didn't work.

Then it must be time to go back for more advice or change GI docs

Quote:

The dosage information for IBS that I have been given by doctors and soluble fiber supplement manufacturers, and that I believe works best for preventing IBS symptoms, is as follows:

*For the soluble fiber powders (Heather's Tummy Fiber™ Organic Acacia Senegal, Citrucel, Benefiber)
Start at 1/2 - 1 level teaspoon twice a day and over the next week or two (or three or four) work up to 2-4 tablespoons twice a day, or the equivalent of 12-25 grams of soluble fiber supplement per day. Some people may need less than this (typically for diarrhea) and some folks may need up to 30 grams per day (typically for chronic constipation). Just keep gradually increasing your dose until you stabilize, and then stay there. Please note that different manufacturers may have different maximum dosages on their labels. Check with the individual manufacturer if you are exceeding the dosage they recommend.
