I've had ibs-d since 2004, I have been to almost every doctor in Nashville, no answers... I have tried the fennel tea and it is good... To get me out of the house, I used to have to starve myself... I would go a week or 2 without food, and downing immodium or lomotil... I've read on the board, now my diet is EVERYDAY, dry corn pops cereal through out the day... Then dinner I have chicken with a baked potato with french bread... I also take benefiber 2tsp 3 times a day... Which is fine, but now I have switched from IBS xtreme D to xtreme C.. I often feel I need to go to the restroom but nothing... When I do, it feels like the urge won't go away... If anyone has a suggestion? Sorry this is sooooo long, sometimes it feels like I am on the end of my rope.. I wouldn't wish IBS on anyone... Seems to be alot of nice people here.. Sad to say its good to not be alone, nobody in my family really understands my struggles... Well, thanks so much for reading, God Bless...

you probably need some fat. Soluble Fiber - what you're eating now - has to be your base but you need Insoluble Fiber, also. The lack of Insoluble Fiber is why you've swung to C.

You can't really learn Heather's EFI Diet just from reading the Boards; you need to read the rest of the website too. Here's a sticky post that has links that will walk you through what you need to know: web page

You should pay particular attention to what Heather says here about how to break the cycle of attacks: eat nothing but Soluble Fiber (which is what you're doing except for the chicken) for just a few days , then begin adding in Insoluble Fiber. She has suggestions on how to do that adding in slowly and carefully. That's what you need to start doing.

The feeling of incomplete evacuation - still having to go even after going - is common in IBS sufferers. For me it resolved as my tummy stabilized and using a Soluble Fiber Supplement really helped.

I hope this helps and if you have questions, please ask.

Welcome to the Boards.

Welcome to the board.

It would be helpful if you listed all the foods and snacks you have eaten in the past 2 days so we can make some suggestions. Did you eat the skin of the baked potato? What veggies and fruit are you eating?

When you say you switched from IBS-D to IBS-C do you mean the bowel movement frequency decreased to less than 3 time per week or do you mean you still have frequent bowel movements each day but you pass small amounts of hard stools?

While it is nice to be able to eat insoluble fiber many of us with IBS-D find that insoluble fiber exacerbates our symptoms so we try to keep soluble fiber as high as possible and insoluble fiber as high as possible but usually much lower than soluble fiber. It can be difficult because most soluble fiber foods contain insoluble fiber as well. Soluble fiber supplements are the exception because the soluble fiber has been separated from the insoluble fiber.

Let me give you an example. I am quite stable and I like to experiment to figure out what new things I can add to my diet. Yesterday I experimented with a very small serving of Stacy's pita chips. These pita chips contains small amounts of oat bran and whole wheat flour. Early this morning I woke up with cramps and D. Other times when I have increase insoluble fiber I have many bowel movements with small hard stools. So while in theory it is nice to eat insoluble fiber if you are IBS-D many of us just cannot do it! Also, the IBS research shows there is little benefit from addition insoluble fiber to relieve constipation. Soluble fiber on the other hand delays emptying of the stomach and slows small intestine transit time. It seems to be moderately effective for D.

Well at least what you are eating now is better than no food at all.
It is time to incorporate some more foods in to your diet. There would be no way to get over the C otherwise. The benefiber is good. Just very gradually increase it over several weeks. So you need to add foods that will help your C without giving you D. Start with the easier to digest fruits and veggies like SF fruits (mango, ripe banana, apple sauce, canned peaches) and cooked SF veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, other root veggies, mushrooms, squash, and well cooked green veggies like peas, green beans, asparagus, spinach).
Take peppermint capsules before eating and drink the fennel tea with peppermint mixed in to make sure your gut spasms won't swing and give you D. Start slowly by just adding one or two things a day. Hope this helps.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
