Scared of Anger

Hello-

Hope all had a nice holiday. I had a scary experience over the last day, and am wondering how extreme it should be considered. I woke up from sleep last night with some very bad "night pains". Everytime I tried to sit up, I almost blacked out. Eventually I got myself back into bed, but the next morning I woke up with a very strange headache that was not touched by advil. I have gone through all the procedures to ensure it's only IBS I have even though I have read that night pains are not frequently associated with IBS.

I went into work the next day and couldn't find a parking space in front of my building. I just snapped for no apparent reason. I mean, how big of a deal is it to not find a parking spot? I managed to break the lever in my car that controls the turn signals and headlights. I'm still in shock. I don't know what caused this. I've read previously that anger is a part of IBS-D, of which I'm alternating between that and C.

I'm on a medication, and am calling my doctor tomorrow, but I'm honestly scared about this. There was no surrounding stress leading up to that time, (I woke up happy other than the headache) and yet it happened. I know the drills to calm myself (breathing, music, etc) but I had no time to think about those before I lost it.

Anything will help, be it advice, or just comfort.

Very nervous-
StrmGirl

Hi, StrmGirl97. I'm glad to hear you are going to call your doctor. I think that others experience pain that severe so it is certainly possible that it is all just an IBS attack. Are headaches a typical IBS problem? I don't get them personally. It's good to check with doc, though, especially if you are on meds. Let us know what he/she has to say...

Hi, hang in there. It's a great idea to call your doctor. Just try to relax in your favorite ways. Sometimes my IBS wakes me up at night with bloating pain or diarhea. Also, I get migranes from sleep deprivation and hunger and no, advil does not help me. A dark room, relaxation and a cold wash cloth on my head helps with 3 extra strength Tylenol. Fortunatly, my migranes do not occur often enough or last long enough to require migrane medication, according to my doc. Also, sometimes my IBS makes me so upset that I become really angry. I try to calm myself as best I can. So good luck! Cheers

Anger and Perfectionism new

Hi StrmGirl,

I am a "D". I often get headaches, early in the morning hours, which wake me up. They're really intense and it takes a long time for them to go away. But they DO go away.

I also have an anger issue, but I attribute it to my terrible fanaticism. I am such a perfectionist, I expect the whole world to operate properly, and when it doesn't I get upset. It's absurd, it's unreasonable, it's everything stupid, but it's me, and I have to deal with it. For example, for some reason one of the tenants we had in this condo complex insisted on parking right in front of the building instead of in the designated parking spaces. It drove me crazy. I got so insensed, sometimes enraged. To me, it showed a lack of respect for others who need to walk around her car to get to the stairs, and I have no tolerance for people who are inconsiderate of others.

Then one day, I was waiting for the owner of the car so I could let her know how inconsiderate she was being. The driver was an elderly man who walked over to the passenger side and helped his very invalid wife gently into her wheelchair.

My anger is much better now -- but now I have my eye on that idiot who keeps parking on the GRASS!

Okay, this is a long way of telling you we need to handle our anger better. It doesn't help us -- in the long run it just works AGAINST us. We can't change the world, all we can change is how we deal with all the idiots in it.

It's a good thing that you are going to see your doctor. Maybe you are a perfectionist like me? Maybe you expect the world to be perfect too -- like me? One of my past bosses, an attorney, left me a note one time that I kept -- I still have it -- and I don't know if he was being complimentary or serious. He said, "It is a mistake to go through life expecting the rest of the world to be as nice as you are."

Good luck with the doctor, and keep us informed, okay?

Bev makes a strong point. We all need to control our anger better. With that said, if it is to the point of scaring yourself, definitely talk to your Doc. Yes, anger can make IBS worse, but is not a "symptom" of IBS. Just because you have IBS I would not consider anger and bad headaches another symptom like gas and dirrarhea.
That doesn't mean the angry burst was important - because it obviously frightened you. First, give yourself a break. We all snap once in a while. Then talk it over with your Doc and see if there's another issue you need to discuss. Take care of yourself.
