I'm having a really hard time controlling my IBS symptoms. Part of the problem is that I'm also having frequent heartburn so peppermint can irritate heartburn more. How long does it take for the gut to stabilize after a bad attack? My gut has been swinging from constipation to diarrhea and I've lost weight. Any tips?

This website is so vast that sometimes I get rather lost.

Yes, Megan, it's easy to get lost on this site initially. Once you get accustomed to navigating around and using the 'Search' feature, you will find this site 'user friendly'...

I would suggest that you use Heather's double enteric coated peppermint capsules. You are unlikely to get any heartburn from those, given they don't dissolve until after they leave the stomach.

Until you stabilize, eat things that are high in soluable fiber. Stick with rice, pastas, french or sourdough bread, etc. Stay away from dairy. Drink rice milk, peppermint tea, bottled water, warm chicken broth, etc.

There is nothing wrong with taking OTC Imodium when you really need it. It knocks the immediate cramping and helps stop the diarrhea. I know what it is like to lose weight from lack of proper nutrition and constant trips to the bathroom with undigested food, thus lack of nourishment. Weight loss is often a function of dehydration from the diarrhea. Once re-hydrated again, your weight should be closer to normal.

Keep reading and learning... lots of good info on this site!
