I have been following an elimination diet now for 2 months to test my Fruc Mal symptoms, and am 90% BETTER! During the first 6 weeks I eliminated all sugar, and am now adding back (slowly) certain fruit.

I am scheduled to take the hydrogen breath test in January, but no matter what the outcome, I really think I've found some answers. This is the only dietary approach I've found that addresses my life long food intolerance to high fructan foods like onions, wheat, fruit, chicory, etc.

I read Syl's posts on this subject for a long time before acting on the information. This fall I was having so much bloating and pain that I finally decided to Take Action. I went to an allergist and got tested for any possible food allergies (nothing positive except for lettuce)---to rule that out. I went to a gastroenterologist and had a flex sig, which showed no obvious problems except for some inflammation.

The Fruct Mal diet relieved the pain and bloating in 3 days! I'm not completely out of the woods yet, but I'm SO much better.

Calli,

I am pleased to hear that a reduced excess fructose/fructan diet is making a difference. It made a big difference to me, however, I still have to follow the general EFI diet too.

Recent research suggests that up to 50% of IBSers experience fructose malabsorption. I think all IBSers would benefit by removing excess fructose foods from their EFI diet for a week or so and then slowly reintroduce some excess fructose foods to see if they worse IBS symptoms. If they do then you know you have modify the EFI diet to remove these foods.

Have a wonderful holiday season
