If you think food allergies are part of your IBS symptoms then it might be best to ask your GP for a referral to an allergy doctor so the right tests can be done. Food allergies tests are usually not as effective as an elimination diet in figuring out how to manage IBS symptoms through diet and they are expensive.

thanks syl.....the test is comprehensive of 110 foods....and costs about $229 ...70% covered by my insurance....but wondering if allergy is differant from intolerance...ie i might not be allergic to nuts but perhaps my system doesnt tolerate them well? Also, perhaps knowing these food allergies could cause more anxiety...not sure...

"Comment: IgG antibodies to food are commonly detectable in healthy adult patients and children, independent of the presence of absence of food-related symptoms. There is no credible evidence that measuring IgG antibodies is useful for diagnosing food allergy or intolerance, nor that IgG antibodies cause symptoms. In fact, IgG antibodies reflect exposure to allergen but not the presence of disease. The exception is that gliadin IgG antibodies are sometimes useful in monitoring adherence to a gluten-free diet patients with histologically confirmed coeliac disease. Otherwise, inappropriate use of food allergy testing (or misinterpretation of results) in patients with inhalant allergy, for example, may lead to inappropriate and unnecessary dietary restrictions, with particular nutritional implications in children. Despite studies showing the uselessness of this technique, it continues to be promoted in the community, even for diagnosing disorders for which no evidence of immune system involvement exists."

Intolerances are not the same thing as allergies. While allergies can be detected through testing intolerances are best determine through diet elimination. It is best to talk to a allergist doc before purchasing expensive and perhaps unnecessary allergy tests.

Food allergies are different then food intolerences, food allergies involved the immune system and food intolerences do not.
Nuts and shellfish are two of top foods people could be allergic too.

My doctor recommended this but he is a chiropractor.....Im feeling like my symptoms are probably more intolerances since allergies have a differant side effect profile than intolerances, no?

I would talk to a regular GP first. The symptoms of food intolerance and allegies can be similar but the methods of determine which is causing the symptoms are different. Allergy tests will not detect food intolerances.
