Peppermint capsules and acacia.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I didn't realize the peppermint capsules helped with this issue. Are they safe to take with the Lomotil and Librium I take? I've tried the acacia but don't think I gave it a long enough run. I take Konsyl fiber right now one dose at night.

The peppermint capsules stop abdominal cramps. They have halted impending D for me many times and prevent D from eating out if I take them before.
I don't know what Konsyl fiber is but I really like acacia.

I don't get the cramps but I could use them for preventing the D more naturally than the lomotil is. Konsyl fiber is psyllium husk fiber

How do you get D without cramps? Cramps/spasms to be specific are what cause D. Peppermint oil calms the spasms.

Mrae- you are not alone. I don't get cramps either. I will just wake up with D, but am pain free except for the bloating.

I don't have straight diarrhea. I have urgent bowel movements. So I guess its the urgency that is my issue.

It is all basically the same thing: cramps, urgency and D (and C and bloat) is all caused by spasms in the colon. Remember IBS used to be called Spastic Colon. The peppermint calms those spasms- even if you don't feel them per se.

I also have urgency at times, but only occasionaly. I think that it may be more due to some anxiety. Have you tried the hypno tapes? They have helped many.

Gerikat- Yes I have tried the hypno cds, they work ok for me. Might be a good idea to start them again but the anxiety med Librium I am taking is helping alot and the Lomotil helps with the urgency and spasms. But if the peppermint capsules do the same thing I could try those for more natural way of helping myself.

How many per day do you take of the Pepperment Capsules? What times? Have you tried other brands of the capsules?

I need to know the same thing, how many to take when to take them and is it ok that I take other meds even if I start taking the peppermint capsules?

at the top of this page labelled "Peppermint Oil Capsules - How to Use 'Em!". According to information on this web site take one capsule on an empty stomach. There should be no problem taking them with other medication.

Heather's peppermint tea bags are really good, I love how big they are and the strong taste. I can buy peppermint tea anywhere, and usually have to use two bags of other brands to get it strong enough, but one of Heather's tea bags is perfect. I have been having it as my first cup in the morning and refill it until afternoon. After about a month of having it first thing in the morning, I noticed a decrease in urgency and spasm in the mornings. I am not sure if this is solely due to the tea because I made a few other changes around the same time. I also use the acacia, 2 Tbs in soy yogurt in the a.m. and 2 more Tbs in water later in the day. every time I say I am doing better I have episodes but have been a little more stable lately. I am hooked on the tea, it's one of my simple pleasures.

I just received Heather's Tummy Tamers (peppermint oil capsules) and it states on the bottle, good for diareah, cramps, and urgency. May want to give them a try. I haven't opened bottle yet, as the calcium and my elimination diet have been helping so much. I have tried other peppermint caps in the past and they didn't work, so can't say for sure how hers will be. But she has many good reviews on this forum and site, so the fennel and ginger and double coating are probably the key differences that work.
