Citrucel conflicts

I started out with IBS-D when I was first diagnosed years ago, but I was prescribed Pamine (methscapolamine bromide), which can cause constipation, so now I consider myself an IBS-A (not because I'm that way naturally, but because I end up having to deal with both C and D).
It's a vicious cycle. I have an IBS-D episode out of the blue and then start taking the Pamine, but get backed up and stop taking it after a few days to a week, which results in incredible unpleasantness in the other direction.

I haven't been "regular" since I first started having IBS issues, and I feel like my biggest problem is not being able to fully empty my bowels due to unformed BMs. I've noticed that Citrucel definitely helps with formation and the emptying, but for me, it also results in terrible bloating, cramping, and urgency. Also, after having about three formed BMs that day (these usually occur within the same hour), I'll get diarrhea for a bit if I don't take Pamine or Imodium.

I know I probably don't have enough fiber in my diet, but I'm apprehensive about how to gradually add it, because taking half of a dose of Citrucel doesn't do anything, but a full dose does too much. I really like the idea of soluble fiber supplements helping both diarrhea and constipation, but I have yet to see these effects.
Should I just assume that my body hasn't gotten used to the sudden influx of fiber and keep taking a full dose until I grow more accustomed to it?

I occasionally take Citrucel to help me go when I am backed up. It works pretty well, but not without its side effects. However, I've been taking the acacia fiber, starting at a low dose and slowly working my way up. The acacia fiber does not seem to effect me negatively. (Nor does it make me have a BM overnight, which is why I've taken Citrucel to get things moving). I think Citrucel has artificial ingredients that bother many IBS sufferers, myself included. I'm guessing it's the same for you. Not sure if you've tried the acacia fiber, but I've heard it really helps IBS-D people. It's recommended you start at a really low dose if you're sensitive to fiber, 1/4 teaspoon in the morning and evening and add a 1/4 teaspoon every 4 days or so. I hope that helps!

Thanks!

I've been thinking about getting the tummy fiber, but naively assumed that all fiber supplements had the same effects. Silly me.

What's the regular dose that I'd be working up to from 1/4 tsp?

Awesome, thanks!

I only take the Citrucel when I absolutely have to, but it will be great to have a safe, regular source of stabilizing fiber.
