Restarting Benefiber+Acidiphillus Questions/Concerns

I recently stopped using Benefiber for a week and Acidiphillus for 11 days as a prep for my Bacterial Overgrowth Test (which I ended up having to cancel!).

I restarted it a couple of days ago.

Since then I have noticed that I have felt more bloating/swelling/distension and occasional some bladder/low groin aches.

I wanted to know if I jumped back in to quickly.
I went back to my regular dosage of
-6 tsps of Benefiber per day
-2 Acidiphillus pills per day

I didn't think this would be a problem since I was not off these too long.
Anyway...I wanted to know if this could be to blame for my symptoms and if I should change the dosage and more gradually ease back in?
If so...any suggestions?

Thanks.

Yep - it could be related to the fact that you didn't take the probiotic and fiber supplement for nearly two weeks. Probiotics live for a very short period of time and need to be continuously replenished. It may take a few days for the bloating etc to decrease. Better to ease back in.

Which probiotic are you taking? Does it happen to contain FOS?

Why did you cancel your test?

FOS is fructooligosaccharides a rapidly fermentable soluble fiber which can cause gas, bloating, and subsequent abdominal pain even in normal individuals as discussed by Heather here. Inulin is a FOS. Many fruits and vegetables contain FOS such as onion, garlic, asparagus, leek, and Jerusalem artichoke.

I see. Well, I do eat artichokes, onion and garlic, without noticing any problems. What is the difference between an artichoke and a Jerusalem artichoke? I use artichokes in dips.

A Jerusalem artichoke is also known as a sunchoke. It contains high amounts of inulin - a FOS. It isn't related to a globe artichoke.

1) So you think it would better to ease back into it?
-What makes sense...1 week half dose...before up to a regular dose?

2) Why would these cause problems since they are supposed to help IBS?

3)
Ingredients:
Maltodextrin, tapioca starch, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), vitamin C, and tricalcium phosphate. Capsule consists of gelatin.

It has InsulinFOS...here is a link
http://www.jarrow.com/product-227

-Is this a problem?

4) I cancelled the test because I didn't realize I was on Doryx an anti-biotic.

1. Sure 1/2 dose Benefiber for a week or so should be fine.
2. Most probiotics can cause gas and bloating for a few days when you start to take them.
3. The ingredients looks fine except for FOS. FOS is a rapidly fermentable soluble fiber known to cause problems for IBSers. You might try the original version which does not contain FOS. However, you might look for a probiotic that contians Bifidobacterium particularly Bifidobacterium infantis which has been clinically tested on IBS.
4. Oh - indeed - Doryx is a broad spectrum antibiotic that definitely could effect the outcome of the breath test

My mistake....I do have and use the original.

I have most certainly noticed some of the worst bloating/swelling in months...and this has occurred once I resumed the Benefiber and Acidiophillus.

1) You feel this is to blame?
2) How long should it take before my body re-adjusts?
3) I am REALLY surprised being off these for 1-10 days can make the body have to re-adapt.
4) Avoid FOS from now on?
-Which adiphillus would you recommend?
-Jarrow/Align?

Thanks.

1) You feel this is to blame?

Quite possible. However, you said you have been taking an antibiotic which may also be contributing significantly to the problem too.

2) How long should it take before my body re-adjusts?

Likely a week or two

3) I am REALLY surprised being off these for 1-10 days can make the body have to re-adapt.

Yep!

4) Avoid FOS from now on?

Yes

-Which adiphillus would you recommend?
-Jarrow/Align?

Align is not does not contain the probiotic acidophilus. It contains the probiotic Bifidobacterium infantis. Only a couple of small clinical trial have been done using acidophilus for IBS. The results have been mixed. A couple of large clinical trials have been done on Align with quite favorable results. Align is likely the better choice.
