I have read a good portion of Heathers book on ibs. I've just started following her plan and have started taking Heathers Tummy Fiber at a low dose. I still have boughts of constipation but I expect this as I am just a beginner. My question is this: until my smyptoms are under control are stool softners safe? The doctor says yes but then he also says I need to eat more whole grain, beans, and cauliflower etc. while staying away from the foods Heather recommends. I know from past experience the doctors orders just don't help. They just cause pain and gas. Anyway I just wanted Heather(or anybody else) opinon on the safety of stool softners (I use 2 100mg capsles of Colace). Could I eventually stop using them as I increase my fiber?

Stool softeners are quite safe. I use them when I travel. They don't act quickly.

Older doctors still think that cereal bran is the solution to IBS constipation. Younger doctors know, or at least should know, that research shows cereal bran can exacerbate IBS. As for beans and cauliflower any doctor should know these are problem foods -- even for some non-IBSers

Thanks for the quick response. You know he really isn't that great a doctor. I probably should switch.

Wow, these old country bumpkin doctors...they just don't keep up on the research. I do incorporate beans into my diet in the form of a bean dip and cauliflower into soup, so it can be done, but you will have to see how it affects you. Yep, find a new doc.

I am up to 3 tablespoons of acacia fiber a day after a month on the IBS diet; I also take 1 peppermint capsule every a.m. and a cup of Fennel tea in the a.m. I split the 3 doses of fiber throughout the day. I am still having trouble with constipation and sometimes terrible gas(although the constipation is better and I am off of the daily Miralax doses prescribed by my GI doc., thank goodness); I have started taking Beano before bean dip, etc., for gas. I really don't want to increase acacia to more than 3 T a day. Are there any other suggestions out there other than tons of water and exercise? Does anyone incorporate a few Fibercon pills along with acacia every day for constipation relief?
